The man of the hour in motocross right now is
Rick Doughty, the owner of Vintage Iron in southern California
and organizer of the World Cup. Doughty and his good friend
Greg Primm of Primm Collections raised
$100K in less than a week and put together a race that drew about half what
a national at Glen Helen pulls in, and it was the coolest race of the year
so far. Fourteen international teams participated and fans from all
over had a blast!

Jeff Ward, David Bailey, Jeff
Emig, and Ryan Hughes at the
World Cup.

World Cup of Motocross

"The Baz," one of
the first people to put together Motocross Action magazine, gave the opening
prayer at the World Cup Sunday. The Baz is now a minister but still
follows motocross. Where does he get his info? The Internet of
course. Baz's regular stops are
www.racerxill.com, www.cyclenews.com,
Meyer's GP site
www.motocrossgrandprix.com,
and right here on Motonews!
Anger Season:
Just about all the key US races are over for 2002, except for the US Open in
less than two weeks. That means it's "internet anger" season, that
time of year when talking about racing on the message boards gives way to
anger and war games. DC from Racer
X even got some email threats from his last Racerhead column. Last
year the fuss was over RC switching to
Honda. This year it's RC skipping the World Cup, an un-sanctioned race
that he was not contracted to ride and was not in Honda's plan for 2002.
People are entitled to be disappointed if they expect RC to race somewhere
and he doesn't, but the message board war games have gone way too far.
People also seem to forget that RC hasn't broken any promises. If a
fan spent money and took time off to see RC race in southern California last
weekend, and missed him, their issue is with the promoter, not RC or Honda.
The MXoN at Comp Park fell apart. Not RC's problem. The World Cup
tried and could not get him. Not RC's problem. The promoters of
races are the ones who work the deals to get the riders, get the word out on
who is coming, and sell the tickets. RC's job is to win the
races Honda sends him too. He did his job better than anyone last
summer. Good for him, and shame on the people taking their MXoN-related
disappointment out on RC.
Who's in/out for the US Open?
Reed and Ferry
are in, MC, Tortelli, and
Roncada are out. Suzuki just got
Tortelli and Roncada on RMs and they need the time to test and get ready for
Anaheim.
Who's in/out for world supercross in December?
MC and KTM are in, Yamaha probably, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki are out.
Who's in/out for the MXoN in Spain? Turnout is
not looking good, for sure it will be really bad compared to what it could
have been if the race would have stayed in southern California.
RC is definitely out, and America's
participation is even questionable. The annual Team USA manager
Roger DeCoster is not going.
Tortelli's mechanic when he was at Honda,
Shane Drew, will be
LaRocco's mechanic in 2003, replacing
Paul DeLaurier. Honda is pleased
enough with LaRocco that they are supplying Drew as the mechanic to the
Amsoil/Factory Connection team.

Chad Reed, Michael Byrne,
and Craig Anderson won the World Cup at
Glen Helen!
The World Cup was a remarkable success.
Organized in just over one week from the remnants of the cancelled MXoN at
Comp Park, the event benefited from a world of teams and fans who already
had travel plans and responded to the news on the internet that a race would
go forward. The result was a lot of flag-waving fun, and great racing.
Kawasaki missed the party except for a Pro Circuit bike for Team France's
Eric Sorby. Honda was there with bikes
for Japan and Costa Rica (no semi), KTM was there with
Grant Langston (also no semi), and Suzuki brought its semi and
its newest star Sebastien Tortelli, and
Team USA's Sean Hamblin. Yamaha
decided to use the event to give Chad Reed
and Tim Ferry some competition time on
its new YZ450, and they stole the show.
Doug Dubach won
the masters race after some close racing with Jeff
Emig. Mike Alessi ran off and left the 80 class.
Here is a clarification from Meyer about something he
wrote last week:
"I had spoken to
Joel Smets on September 22 about the
chances of him racing the re-organized Motocross of Nations (to be held in
Bellpuig, Spain). I first asked Joel what he thought of the change, and he
told me it was crazy and not good for the sport. When I asked him if he
would race the re-scheduled event he said he would, he was a racer and it
was an important event. I had thought that Joel knew about the event being
changed to Spain, although having talked to him last night Sep 29) he told
me he thought I was talking about possibly racing in Glen Helen (had it been
given the des Nations). It was a total misunderstanding and for that I am
very sorry to Joel. I have since apologies to Joel, at which he said it was
okay. I would like to state though that in the press release Joel mentioned
that he had not spoken to me in several weeks, which was totally untrue. I
had spoken to Joel at the Russian Motocross Grand Prix on September 15 and
also the Belgian Sidecar Grand Prix on September 8, plus last Sunday evening
(September 22). Joel obviously speaks to many journalists and he had
obviously forgotten about these three occasions."

threaten his career, but its not so. He told people at the Fast Nuts

be fine. His injury was just in the muscle which heals up OK. He
will definitely be racing the world supercross rounds in December.

RC and LaRocco

RonRon started slowly,
about 4th out of 7. Got passed and was in 5th after about 5 laps. It didn't
look like he was going to make it. A local kid,
Justin Ackers (sp?) led for ~17 laps, the local crowd was going
crazy (he will be racing the west coast 125 supercross series). He was
impressive. Erik
Kehoe was in 2nd and hauling. Yeah!! Well finally RonRon got his
rhythm and started picking people off. He slowly moved toward the front, as
passing was really hard on such a tight track. He finally passed Kehoe on
about the 16th lap and started to catch the leader Ackers.
It was going to go right down to the wire
but Ackers got sideways in the whoop section and RonRon was by in flash. But
it was still a great race. For most of the
race, it truly did not look like RonRon was going to win. He said after the
race that it was really a challenge and he said that it was and incredible
workout (which I believe because he was sweating like a pig).

That means he goes with Thor gear. He has a No Fear contract that is
part of his Suzuki deal, so to change that would require a change of bikes.
The only place left for Travis is Kawasaki/Thor gear. Could it be?

Here is the word from Dorna in a press release this
morning:
Motocross of Nations Event in the USA cancelled
and replaced:
The company
Dorna Off-Road (DOR), promoter and holder of the rights for the Motocross of
Nations, informed the FIM about serious problems affecting the organisation
of the Motocross of Nations due to take place in Competition Park, San
Jacinto, California, on September 28-29.
According to DOR, these problems generated uncertainty and confusion over
the effective realisation of this event. Therefore, DOR requested the local
organiser, Competition Park Motocross Sports Inc., to provide evidence and
to confirm that it was still holding all the valid rights, licenses and
authorisations in order to organise the event. Furthermore, DOR also sought
the official position of the United States Department of the Interior, which
replied in a letter received this morning, indicating that "the Department
believes the motocross project is an illegal operation and has to be shut
down".
Consequently, DOR indicated that it had no other alternative but to request
the cancellation of the Motocross of Nations in San Jacinto, and this was
accepted by the FIM Executive Board.
However, considering the prestige and tradition of the Motocross of Nations,
the event will be re-scheduled in Bellpuig, Spain, on October 19-20.

Toon by Marc Estabrooks,
www.factorymx.com.
More MXoN bits: The rumors from Europe indicate
Pichon may want out of the event, and we
have no word from the US teams if they will make the trip to Spain on short
notice.
Dorna did talk to Glen Helen about moving the event there
but they could not come to terms.
More to read:
Here is a July 3, 2002
letter to the Soboba leader from the Dept of Int. This was
uncovered by Bauer. It states that
if there were an injury and lawsuit at the track, the US could get sued, and
if that happens the funds could come out of the Bureau of Indian Affairs
budget. Ouch! After someone was killed at the track meetings
were held and that's when the battle over shutting it down started.
Non-MXoN stuff: The rumor from the big trade show
in Munich is that Parts Unlimited bought
20% of Alpinestars.

What happened Friday at Comp Park:
(based on the excellent reporting of our own
Honorable Semen D Bauer-and
just plain rumors)
Friday morning people were waiting for the
word that a summary of what Comp Park and its lawyers finished
Thursday would be approved by Dorna. At last the Comp Park
issue would be put to rest and they could proceed with running
the MXoN as planned. That all changed this afternoon when
a shutdown notice was put up at the track by the feds and the
track locked up and closed.
A meeting was held Friday afternoon, and
so far all that is known is:
-Holding the event at Comp Park/Soboba
res. as planned has still not been ruled out. We don't
know what Dorna would have to say about that though because they
may have no confidence.
-Glen Helen is standing by
as an alternative. Again we don't know what Dorna would
have to say about that. If they do that GH and Comp Park
will negotiate how to handle the tickets.
-Comp Park is asking Dorna to extend the deadline to clear up
the facility question until Monday at 8am.
-If the MXoN is moved away from the states, the plan is to race
in Spain on Oct 26-27.
-We don't know what American Honda will do about racing on a
date that is moved one month back.
RC wanted his last race this year to be the US
Open Oct 11-12. Tim Ferry
badly wants to race in this MXoN so he would very likely go.

And since you are here: Motonews
would like to say thanks for stopping by to all the GP folks who
want to see if they will take a trip here next week. It's
not a bad place really. We hate politics. But, we do
like World Champion Mickael Pichon.

"Drop dead" day for MXoN in US? The latest buzz
in the MXoN/Comp Park saga is that Dorna
is going to decide today if it wants to continue with having the MXoN at
Comp Park on Sept 28-29. If the rumor is accurate, Dorna wants to see
how Comp Park can prove they can hold the race without having it blocked.
If they aren't satisfied today, they will move the MXoN back a month and
have the MXoN in Europe, with Spain mentioned as a possible location.
Either way, maybe the waiting will be over and we hear something today.

"We are aware of the negative press and circumstances surrounding the MX
des Nations and most recently the letters which appeared on an industry
website today. These letters have no legal basis and we seriously question
the motive of publishing these letters. We are doing everything legally
within our powers to assure that the event takes place as scheduled. While
there are issues regarding the long-term operation of Competition Park, these
issues should not affect the running of the Motocross des Nations. Thank
you, Malcolm McCassy, Competition Park."

yesterday and today were spent dialing the bikes in for the on-track footage
to be shot on Monday. The track the two will be riding on is kind of a cross
between an AX and SX track. Bentley says there's some "pretty gnarly" jumps
on it. Richards added that Bentley's also convinced that when star Cameron Diaz
meets him he's "Sure she'll
fall in love."
Still more
KW
stuff. WFO reports KW will be at Mosier
Valley this weekend, http://www.gncmx.com/.

For most of the summer, all we heard about
Kevin Windham was that no
one heard from him and he wasn't returning phone calls.
All that has changed in just a few days Now rumors about
his return to racing are pretty common (and reliable). He
is in good spirits and talking again. KW is about to start
riding in Texas on a Bill's Pipes/Billy
Whitley Suzuki, and he will not be doing the complete
supercross series in 2003. He
will be attending the 8th annual Pro Challenge Saturday,
Sept 21 at Swan Raceway Park, Tyler, TX. Look for him to start back for
the nationals, May 2003, and wish him luck.

World supercross is shaping up. CCE
was working the pits at Steel City explaining next year's
program, which already has enough riders on board to make the
Euro rounds a success. MC
and his KTM will be at the Palexpo in
Geneva and the Gelredome
in Holland in
December. Vuillemin is
in, and there are a few more, like Chad
Reed, with many still deciding.
The US delegation to Europe will be twenty 250 riders. The
125 class over there will not be part of the world supercross.
125 guys start their season at Anaheim.
CCE is shipping the 20 bikes and stuff to go with them
from Long Beach, and will handle the movement between races and back.
Euros are excited about the combination of US
supercross talent and a "world championship" name, but U.S. teams are still
getting used to the idea. RC said
at Steel City he wasn't sure if he is in but he will do what Honda decides. Lusk, LaRocco, and
Ferry were undecided too (at least on the record). For
riders running at the front, a couple of weeks in Europe may turn out to be
a good investment. To make the world supercross pay, CCE is splitting
the points fund 50/50 between world supercross and U.S. supercross.
When CCE holds it's banquet in May after Vegas, the world champion will be
honored, not the US champion.
A few more bits:
-The euro spec gas problem is solved for now.
The 2 world supercross rounds will allow US specs for this year. In
2004 they will be back to FIM gas and sound specs.
-The announcement of the new title sponsor has moved to the US Open weekend.
-Marketing for supercross in the US will carry the "[title sponsor] World
Supercross" logo and name. That means you will be seeing World
Supercross on the signs at Anaheim, even if many riders are just racing for
US supercross points and that may be round 1 for them.
World supercross, back when it was an all FIM/Action
Group series, struggled for legitimacy because they basically had a handful
of GP riders pitted against US riders who were racing for start money, and
not that serious about it. This time the points mean something and the
tie-in with US supercross is there. Euro supercrosses typically sell
out pretty easy so it really won't take a lot of top names for the US series
to make Geneva and Holland work, but the more the better.

RC went 1-1 at
Steel City, completing an unprecedented perfect season, 24-0 moto wins!
Add to that the last three supercrosses and RC has been on top of the podium
for the last 27 times the gate has dropped. Not even Bob Hannah ever won that many in a row.
RC also broke Hannah's all time record for 250 class wins: Hannah 27,
RC 28 (and counting). Bubba also
went 1-1 at Steel City, but Matt Walker
had his best outdoor day ever, leading most of the first moto and making
Bubba work for it. Bubba has set records this season too, most notably his
10 wins out of 12, a record for the 125 class, and he's a rookie!
The best part of the press conference at Steel City
was when Bubba said "I know I can beat him (RC) on a 125," and
everyone laughed and went "oooooooooooo." Then RC came back and said "any
time he feels frisky, he can step up to the 250s," (More oooos and laughing).
Stefy Bau
won the WML championship. Jessica Patterson won the Steel City
round.
Alley Semar,
KW's long time mechanic and good friend, is going to run Pro
Circuit's team next year. That doesn't mean he and KW had a falling out, but
Alley needs to take a spot instead of waiting to see if KW decides to return
next year.

List of 2002 MXoN teams. MXoN because its Motocross of
Nations now. Not only did someone ruin the format, they
screwed up the name too!
At Steel City this weekend the attention is again on
RC, where he could do a perfect sweep of
an entire MX season. No one would have ever thought it possible 4
months ago! Also, the last round of the WML national championship will
be decided, with Stefy Bau
leading in
points going into the last round.
In GP's
,
all eyes this weekend will be directed towards defending number one
Stefan Everts, currently leading the 500
standings by 40 points over team-mate Marnicq
Bervoets and 44 points from fellow Belgian
Joel Smets who has won the last two Grand Prix. Everts arrives in
Loket having previously taken a victory at the circuit in 1997 on the way to
winning the 250cc Championship. The factory Yamaha rider and most successful
man in motocross with 54 career wins, and five titles across all classes
(125 in 1991, 250 from 1995 to 1997 and of course the 500 in 2001) is now
perfectly placed to achieve another record by equaling
Joel Robert's haul of six Championships.
