Engine Ice Daily News:
It's official. Art Eckman will NOT be leaving Supercross in 2001! The voice of Supercross on ESPN will be back for at least another year. He was released in October and bowed out gracefully, but things do change. Rumors were circulating a certain article on the web that had emails of people to write to about his release resulted in a surprising outpouring of support for Eckman, and may have turned things around. Check out the Art Eckman interview on www.laassports.com.
The outpouring of support for Art Eckman when the news was out he was released surprised just about everyone. He has a tough job and it's fun to make fun of "Eckmanisms", but people don't want him to go. They decision makers listened, now he's back. Tonight the Rollerball (oops) Arenacross series hits Rockford, Ill for rounds 7/8 and the 15 top riders that go to Geneva, Switzerland Dec 15/16 will be decided. After Saturday's mains, the bikes will be crated and sent air freight to Genava. TFS emag is going too (not air freight though). Another big name is set to ride the Supercross Crossover event Jan 5th.
Triathlete extraordinaire This came in from our Tallon Vohland reporter Marc Vickers: Tallon is flying to Italy to race a few SX's on 250's with cats like Tortelli, Robbie Horton will be racing a self-sponsored Yamaha in SX next year. Sony has announced a new ATV game for the Playstation 2, here's the link. If you are into fantasy motocross racing leagues here is another one to check out, www.fantasyracer.com. There is a new site for women in extreme sports. It's called www.Xgirlsport.com. The editor is Ursula Day, and her email is xgirlsport@hotmail.com. They don't have motocross yet, but a few emails could probably change that. Micheal Brandes will be on a Yamaha next year for Moto XXX. He's already riding one and says its great. A few years ago Motonews had a photo of Windham and Lusk showboating side by side after they went 1-2 at the Charlotte Supercross. A copy of it ended up as desktop backgrounds at Yamaha, but they said they couldn't use it for a win ad because it ws just too radical. Now thanks to the popularity of Freestyle motocross, thinsg have changed. Yamaha just added a new factory rider: Trevor Vines! Here's Dorito's press release: Its Official! Trevor Vines was announced today as Yamaha's Factory Supported Freestyle Motocrosser for 2001. Attending the Yamaha Press Day at a shifter kart track in Southern California, Keith McCarty introduced Trevor as the newest member of the Yamaha family along with riders Jeremy McGrath, David Vuillemin, Tim Ferry, Anthony Gobert, and Tommy Hayden. The Kart thing is a fun day Yamaha has each year about this time for the press to meet all the racers and crash some carts.
From Dorito: SoBe Beverages/THOR MX sponsored Trevor Vines
thrilled his hometown crowd on Friday night at The Pond in Anaheim, CA for the last round
of the IFMA Freestyle Motocross series. Throwing Hart Attack's, Superman Seat Grab -
Indian Airs, McMetz's, No Hand Landers and finishing with The Steralizer, Vines took the
win on Friday in front of Drake McElroy and Kenny Bartram.
Saturday's Main event would see him tie for second with Drake McElroy, ultimately taking
third for the night based on judging criteria. News that SUX dept.: Doug Domokos the "Wheelie King" is dead at 44 after a light plane crash. Here's what DC posted on Mototalk: "I just got the news that a motocross icon passed away yesterday when Doug
Domokos and a friend died in an UltraLite plane crash out near Lake Elsinore. Domokos was
better known as the "Wheelie King," and he was one of the most amazing
motorcycle performers the sport has ever known, doing freestyle ground-tricks that would
boggle your mind, mostly on the back wheel. Doug started trying to ride wheelies around
race tracks back in the mid-1970s, when Gene Ritchie
dared him to try to ride one around Red Bud's National track as halftime entertainment for
one of his early pro races. After that Doug became famous on the MX and SX circuits for
doing his wheelie show. He was a really good guy and always fun to be around. He was part
of the old Hannah/Forti/C.E. Altman/Bill West
crew, pulling pranks off the track that would amaze you. (One time, Hannah crawled under
Domokos' wheelie bike at Mid-Ohio and ran duct tape across the frame on the bottom of the
bike, then wrote "I AM GAY" on it with a black marker for everyone to see while
Doug was wheeling around!) When Jack McGrath and Scotty Mac called
us with the news, we were devastated; another legend rides off into motorcycling
heaven.... Doug was 44." -DC The new EA Sports Supercross game for Sony Playstation is awesome! Watch here for a full review, but here's the short version: Everything people didn't like about the first one is fixed. The bikes turn great and you can pick your line inside a corner or go wide and pivot and stuff another rider anywhere in the turn, hehe. Art and David still call the shots, and you still get to race the real Supercross series on the real tracks. Also, the freestyle section is much, much better. The bikes have real sound, and you even hear a cash register cha-ching when someone gets a hoelshot. Try a series in default camera mode where you can see yourself ride, then switch to helmet cam and you will feel like you are racing a Supercross yourself. Get one! It's that good.
Supercross-Coming to Anaheim Jan 6. Don't miss it! MX East gets a digital cover. OK, so it's only two rounds and Vuillemin didn't defend his title at Leipzig, but so what-LaRocco is the FIM World Supercross champion! Albee was second in points. MC won the second and final round of the FIM series in front of a wild sellout crowd of 15,000 in Leipzig.
"I was giving 110% during all the race as I wanted to take the title, said LaRocco, about passing French champion Bethys in the last corner. "Its always really good to finish the season on a win, especially
after my problems in the last European races. I like Leipzig, the track is a mix of
American and European track and the atmosphere is always When LaRocco showed up for round one with plenty of spare parts, including his own engine, his mechanic Paul DeLaurier said they were there to win. Sure the US riders in the series might rather be getting ready for Anaheim and they are there for start money, but they still take every race seriously. Missing from the results at Leipzig was 125 world champion Grant Langston, who said at Bercy he hoped to recover from a broken sternum in time to make the race and finish. He said his goal was to at least finish a Supercross before Anaheim in January.
Who shot Trevor Vines? These two look suspicious. (Killer photo on Mototalk) The Euro site MX Large has an interesting article by Shayne King about his tough year racing in the US. He talks about how tough it was racing here, and how different it is from the GPs. LAAS Sports did this cool feature on our friend Dorito.
What's it like for us mortals to race Arenacross? Here's a way cool account by Chris Williams Darryll King won the New Zealand national 250 title for Husky, and Merriman got second in an indoor enduro in Barcelona on husky's 250 4-stroke. Here's the press release.
Jeremy Riesenburg, Arenacross racer sponsored by Engine Ice.
Spotted at Joliet SX. Happy Thanksgiving! On store shelves this week: The new EA Sports Supercross 2001 video game! Watch here for a review as soon as a copy hits Pittsburgh. When you start you X-mas surfing, check out a site worked on by our own Steve G, www.troyleedesigns.com. Motodude sent in photos from the Sydney Motorshow, check out the babes, Kim Ashkenasi's KX125, and Danny Hamms Suzuki 400 motocrosser. Sunstar (the sprocket people) are going to team up with ACE to build hardware stores in Japan, here is a link to the story. Now you can hand carry your lumber orders to Lou Lopez at the races.
This weekend the second and final round of the FIM Supercross World Championship takes place in Leipzig, Germany. MC is racing, but since he DNF'd at round one he doesn't have any points. DV is at home getting ready for Anaheim and won't be defending his 1999 world title. LaRocco is a favorite for the title since he was second at Stade de France (round 1). For updates check www.action-group.com. On Sunday 26th the action will continue in Leipzig with the European King of Dirt Challenge including FMX (with Edgar Torronteras, Carey Hart and Mike Jones), BMX (with Timo Pritzel and Adam Baker) and MTB. Gates open at 12.00 and action start at 2.00 p.m
A web rumor had Fro in Australia for something, but he's at home. His The Edge Sports.com rider Michael Byrne is home in Aussieland for the last race in his Honda contract. After that he's back to the states to ride green. Over 1.5 million people watched IFMA Freestyle Motocross on NBC this weekend! Here's the press release from SFX. Also from SFX, read about Button's plan to return to racing and the greatest Supercross season ever! Doh! Honda is recalling about 22,000 XR50Rs because the handlebar attachment bolts can break. No one has been hurt because of this but broken bolts have been reported 4 times. There is no confirmation that crazy freestylers who like to play on them were the bolt killers. If you think your XR is affected check with the local Honda dealer if they don't find you..
Florida school crossing.
Who said what at Worcester? Check TFS emag 2000 for quotes from Budman, Snoop, Speedy, Dube, Lange, Holland, Mennenga, Metcalf, Demuth, Gibson, and WIlloh. Click here to read who said who is a punk and who's gonna kick who's ass....
DC mentioned on Mototalk the release of Art Eckman from SX announcing is not a done deal. To find out why, click on www.laassports.com and click Motocross.
Things got pretty wild and crazy at Worcester Saturday night while Budman won everything. At least one series vet isn't happy with the rough riding, a non-Kawasaki dad was angry at green bikes crashing around, riders lost tempers, bikes broke, and the 250 main was red-flagged. A few photos and details are up on the TFS emag 2000. Budman has a huge series lead, 226 to Snoop's 163.
It's normal for lies and rumors to fly on a race weekend. Here's some. You can decide for yourself what you want to believe: Ward racing a Suzuki in Canada, Dowd undecided about the KTM deal and maybe a Kawasaki in Canada, Albee working the floor in SX with DC doing interviews. Vuillemin is back in the country and training again, then he hurt his shoulder and will sit out a few days. Budman swept the Arenacross main events Friday AND Saturday night at Wooo-ster. from www.arenacross.com:
Here's Motoworld of El Cajon's new semi! Rider's are Damon Huffman, Greg Schnell, Keith Johnson, and Isaiah Johnson. Paul "I raced Millville" Lindsey is team manager.
Serbia Deploys Peacekeeping Force to Washington DC This weekend's Racerhead (allways a must-read) has a link to a detailed Supercross preview article by Eric Johnson, also a must read. Eric must have been the kid in school that always had his homework done, dangit! During Thanksgiving week (next week) the center of the MX universe for many will be the "Mini-Os" in Gainesville, Florida. That is the race that was a regular stop for up-and-comers like Ernesto Fonseca, who made the annual trip from Costa Rica before he went pro. Stefy Bau has a cool new deal with Honda for 2001. Here's a summary: -Basically a semi-factory ride, just like LaRocco
had last year. You probably have been losing sleep wondering who revolutionized two-stroke engine design back in the 20s. Relief is here. You can read about Schnuerle and the gang on this Smoke Rider's History Page. Check out the rest of the site too, it's really cool. Gary Semics will be going to California next week to start working with MC to get ready for the 2001 EA Sports Supercross series. We say this every year, but the competition this time seems tighter than ever. A lot of talk will be about will RC or Vuillemin be able to stay with MC for 16 rounds? DC from Racer X said the other day maybe no one has pushed MC to his own limits yet, maybe he will go faster than ever!
Sad News: The great techie/writer/engine buff Gordon Jennings has passed away. Jennings wrote tech articles for years. Before the current web boom, Jennings was experimenting with a proposed mega-site called Wheelbase. This was supposed to be a giant web-based database for everything moto. It appears to have fizzled about 1995, but it's still on line. Check out www.wheelbase.com. It goes without saying the world is in a global information boom that continues to expand. According to an article forwarded by Don Graber, the world in 1999 generated an exabyte of data (1 times 10 to the 18th). If you spread that out evenly over the world's population, Motonews accounted for 48,000 people out of the total if you just consider how much web bandwidth we used up. So there. Your vote does count. (Didn't we hear that somewhere?) Do you loose sleep thinking about how your two-stroke engine works? No problemo. Check out this Animated 2-Stroke. From Dorito: Trevor Vines will debut in his new THOR threads at Van' Triple Crown FMX, and McGrath, Malcolm McCassey and FMX rider Dustin Miller on AIR Sunday night Speedfreaks 97.1FM - 9:00pm. More about Vines: Coming off a 4th place finish on his SoBe Beverage sponsored Yamaha YZ250 at the
last round of the Ride n' Slide series in Irvine Lake, Trevor Vines took 4th and 5th place
finishes at The Edgesports.com Free Ride MX Championship in Las Vegas last weekend.
With temperatures cold and high winds pushing the riders around, Trevor made it through
both days unscathed, finishing 4th on Friday and 5th on Saturday. Along with these
finishes, he gathered points for the Summer X Games and is now qualified to compete at the
Winter X Games in Vermont in February of 2001.
Arenacross racer and Mototalker Jeremy Riesenburg.
Thad at www.laassports.com has an interview with LCS Racing's Adam Mennenga. Have fun, smell good: The Supercross series next year will be officially know as "EA Sports Supercross presented by Speed Stick." Here's the press release. Ryan Mahoney at www.photocross.net reports Mike Metzger is going to try out the crazy Euro racing known as Motard. Steve Lamson and Team Husqvarna will participate
in European races in Genoa (2nd December) and Bologna (8th, 9th,
10th December). TFS emag "Once a Day is All We Ask" Daily News is pleased to announce our new TITLE sponsor, Engine Ice. Welcome to the Engine Ice Daily News. About 30 more photos from the Albany Arenacross are on the TFS emag 2000 section. Check out Jeff Gibson's crunched helmet on the Photos section. What was everyone saying at Albany? Motonews cub reporter Ray Gundy stayed busy Saturday night getting quotes from Budman, Snoop, Gibson, Metcalf, Gonzalez, Demuth, Darcy Lange, and Dube. It's all on the TFS emag 2000 Racing page for Albany.
Swiss SX rider Marc Ristori will be racing the Worcester, MA Arenacross this weekend. Mototalker welkerd for a press release confirming Travis Pastrana will ride 250 Supercross full time in 2001.
Jeff Gibson holds up whats left of his helmet after that crash with Rusty Holland in Saturday's 250 main at Albany. Bauer sent news that former factory Suzuki rider Scott Gillman is looking good for his second F1 powerboat championship title.
Scott Gillman is on the left, 4-time champ Capellini is in the middle.
www.MotoEdge.com has plenty of new product reviews to check out. (If you don't look people will stop sending Chris goodies to review, so make sure you go there-hehe). Here's an Aussie MX site, http://aus.motocross.com with details on the ISDE and Bercy.
Here's the press release confirming St Louis Cardinals pitcher Mark James will race the Supercross Crossover event at Anaheim, Rnd 1. The racing page on the Des Moines Arenacross report has quotes from Pedro Gonzalez, Shane Lusk, Heath Voss, Buddy Antunez, and Adam Mennenga.
Check out FMF's version of Yamaha's new YZ250 4-stroke www.fmfracing.com.
Caption Time. If you have ever wanted to rub elbows with big sports or movie stars, maybe www.ultimatebid.com can help you. They are making a way to bid on really cool experiences e-bay style. How much would you bid to be hold a pit board at a Supercross main event? (What a killer gift idea huh?) Motonews reader Nicolas Lavenant, an Engineering student from the French Institute for Advanced Mechanical Engineering is still hunting for the right place to start his career as a techie in the dirt bike world. If you need a lab grunt who can talk to Thain, Roncada, DV, or Tortelli, he's your man. According to Dorito, freestyler Trevor Vines has signed to use Thor gear for 2001. Even if you travel a lot and already have expenses covered, it's
a good idea to get on the US Airways
E-Savers e-mail list. If you enroll each week they send an e-mail that lets you
know what tickets are going cheap. In the winter trips to Europe can go for less
than 10% of the full fare. For example right now they have LA to Frankfurt at $395.
Here's the latest Moto-art from our art hero Walt Hackensmith. Denny at SFX is already busy getting the third annual Supercross Crossover planned for Anaheim round 1. This is the friday night race that brings all kinds of sports celebs together to try out a Supercross track. This time St Louis Cardinals baseball player Mark James will give it a try! Tim Dixon from Strategic Three Racing helped get this one arranged. This year the Baja 1000 will be a Baja 2000! Team Honda's Johnny Campell will be going for 4 in a row. Honda will have a 5-man team setup with a chase helicopter. They will start in Ensenada, Mexico on Sunday, Nov 12.
Tickets just went on sale for the Jan 27 Phoenix Supercross. They are on
sale at www.sfx.com and
Rob Andrews sent this photo of a 2001 KX125 flat in a berm.
Maybe for the first time in history, Greenies and off-roaders agreed on something to do with land use. Check it out: Off-road agreement reached.
Eric Peronnard and Tim Clark in Des Moines. Anything can happen Dept: When you see these two hanging around, you know something is up. Who would have thought 4 years ago there would be a Supercross on the strip in Vegas? Who would have thought a year ago Arenacross would go to Switzerland? Things are still happening - will SFX take Supercross global? What will happen to the US Open?
Presenting sponsor: The Arenacross series is called the National Arenacross Series, presented by Speedstick. The series is starting it's 17th year.
NEW! Just for Michelle and Charlyn fans... Check out the all-babe Arenacross feature.
What's this camera guy looking at? Charlyn.
Jeff Gibson and Heath Voss won the 125 and 250 mains Saturday at the Arenacross opener. Gibson was flying all night! He got second in the 250 class. Antunez was consistent and earned the most points for the weekend. Pictures will be up later.
Voss was strong at Des Moines.
Miss Arenacross Michelle signed a poster for these three lucky fans.
Demuth and Antunez won the 125 and 250 mains in Des Moines Friday night, Voss won the dash for cash. The AX opener was a new and improved show, very cool. Some pictures are up on TFS emag 2000.
Spotted at Arenacross. Michelle and Charlyn. Dang. DC got his web site (Racerhead) to be the most talked about on the web's uncontrolled Romper Room yesterday. Usually talk about Mototalk leads the news. Artist of the Week: Internet flamer XMikeX.
DC just revealed the Arenacross program that Racer X did, its killer.
Budman (#1) will be defending his Arenacross title this weekend in Des Moines. Just about everyone in the US travel delegation to Bercy had a travel horror story when the Charles De Gaulle airport was closed Monday due to weather. MC and co got out late Monday, but many were lucky to make it out Tuesday. In case you missed it, here's a link to Cannondale's first quarter of 2001 finances. Frequent Motonews contributor Steve Densmore has his own web site. Check out www.stevedensmore.com. He has some bitchin action photos from Steel City.
Here's a few news bits from Denny at SFX: -Racer X will do the Supercross, Arenacross, and FMX programs!
