Engine Ice Daily News: The 125 and 250 photo reports are up on the emag racing section. www.mxnationals.com has some news and photos too. The 2002 MXdN Team USA will again be RC, Travis and Ryno.
Who's In/Who's Out for Red Bud: IN: Steve Lamson. OUT: Tallon Vohland. Motonews doesn't cover the land use debate much. This is mostly a SX/MX sport site and land use concerns dirt riding in general. Also there is just so much debate going on sometimes it seems like two sides making the same arguments over and over neither making any progress. Here's a link to a lengthy article that is worth reading. You won't agree with it but its an interesting look at how the politics of land use have changed. Check it out. The News section also has press releases on the Virginia International Raceway's Engine Ice 200 Mile Team Challenge, linky here.
The Saturday Silly Season Sweep before Red Bud is up here. There is plenty of new stuff to read. OK, forget about Roger DeCoster switching to manage team Honda. That rumor is dead already. Also the 2002 Team USA for the MXdN needs to be firmed up soon. RC (on Kawasaki), Pastrana, and Ryno are on the list for now, but we don't know how long Ryno will be. Tim Ferry is on the gas and would get the nod if there were an applause meter in the pits for this kind of thing. Ryno just spent some time with Jeff Stanton and is ready to see what he can do this weekend at Red Bud. You could say this is a make-or-break weekend. KW's name came up too.
RC can tie Hannah's all time record for outdoor MX wins this weekend if he wins at Red Bud, and he is 21 years old! Some gossip: DC reports that Honda wants to rebuild its motocross program, and that includes bringing back Roger DeCoster. This weekend Motonews will be doing a silly season hunt, but here are a few more tidbits: -MC is expected to stay with No
Fear gear, but he may be the only one. Travis
and KW may be changing clothes. It takes big
budgets to sponsor big names and all the clothing companies are feeling the pain, not just
NF.
Ken Griffey Jr gets an award from the AMA before a Reds game in Cincinnati Thursday night.
Barry Larkin, rides with some famous friends. Cincinnati Reds stars Ken Griffey Jr and Barry Larkin are really big moto fans and a true boost to the sport. Both live in Florida, ride CR250s, and live close to another famous racer, James "Bubba" Stewart. Asked if he would do the Supercross Crossover event at Anaheim, he said "no way," but he would like to try a lap on the track. Here's a sneak preview of the Jurassic Park graphics for Lusk's CR250 and Nicky Hayden's RC51 road racer. Slap the dinosaur to see the photos.
Yesterday Motonews did a photo shoot with Stefy Bau for a project coming up. Here's a modem killing sample. Motonews got a note from the "The Internet's Ultimate Adult Toy Store," ok,ok, its not what you think. Web site buildin Brad is at it again, this time its Tim Ferry's new site, www.timmyferry.com. A headline on Motoworld.com had a few people asking what about Suzuki's Danny Smith resigning. ??? No one else heard anything and the whole thing seems too weird. The audio that was linked to the title mentioned he signed with Suzuki for next year. Maybe resign got mixed up with re-sign?? As far as we know, Smith is still with Suzuki and the headline is in error. From Hartwig: Former Edgesports.com Kawasaki rider Casey Johnson broke his collar bone during pre-season training. Johnson, who moved to Canada to race the nationals in the great white north, took a ride with Morgan Racing Suzuki after Edgesports.com Kawasaki folded at the Pontiac Round of EA SPORTS Supercross. According to Johnson's former Team Manager, Tim Dixon, he will have sit out the first four rounds.
Also from Hartwig: Better known for his come from behind charges, Mike LaRocco has been on the brink of winning
indoor motocross events for years. His results improve Here's a bit about an X-Games qualifier in Colorado Springs. (You may have to be on AOL to view it) The X-Games will be in Philadelphia this year, Aug 17-22. If you missed the new Motonews poll feature, look on the right side of the Motonews.com front page. The current poll asks who is the most impressive 125 rider this year. Mike Brown leads Grant Langston by 9 votes. Here is linky.
Oops dept: One fantasy league website got left off the list on the motonews.com from page. Check out VRM's
Supercross track builder Rich Winkler rides this cool Maico. (Giberson, www.motodrive.com) You know you want to see more off-road programming on TV, including GNCC on FOX. Sure, ya do. Everyone wants more racing on TV (and a reliable schedule) Here's the email to let Fox know you appreciate GNCC racing and want to see more: programming@foxsports.net
MC takes checkered in Mammoth 125
class (photo by www.ridedirt.com) www.ccp-software.com (complete Mammoth
results) and.. 39 YROC/Vintage photos from our own Steve "deadline press" Bauer. See pit photos of Howerton, Croft, Barnett, Moates, Jobe, Tripes, Glover, Lechein, Jones, Holley, Pomeroy, and the lunch that Jack McGrath cooked.
Mike LaRocco, Jesseman, and Boniface are the Factory Connection team, but they aren't the only ones using FC suspension. They also have Larry Ward, Robbie Reynard, Keith Johnson, John Dowd, and Paul Carpenter. Check here for a special Factory Connection photo feature. Steffi Laire, who won the first four motos in WML racing at Glen Helen and Hangtown, is featured on the cover of the German motocross magazine Moto X. Here is their web site, but the cover with Laire isn't posted yet. Even though Laire returned home and didn't race round three at Budd's Creek (which turned out to be just one moto due to thunderstorms) she still leads the series with 100 points, 6 ahead of the 1999 champion Stefy Bau. Tania Satchwell is third with 90 points. Bau just won all three motos of her Loretta Lynn's qualifier in Virginia.
From Carlos Rodriguez O´Malley: Motordakar organizes trail riding trips on honda XR600 through Senegal. We have a pick up for assistance. Hotels and campaments are exotic, clean and comfortable. The food is quite mediterranean. Tasty and good. Senegal is a very stable country politically and people are very friendly. Great Desert and jungle riding! http://www.motordakar.com/dirt.htm Doug Dubach won the open class at Mammoth, MC the 125 class on the YZ250F. Here's an update by Ryan Mahoney: After a very tough open class race on Thursday for Jeremy
McGrath when he suffered a first lap crash and had to play catch up all
moto. Then in the second moto Jeremy fell victim to a flat tire that took him out of the
race. Friday was 125 day and Jeremy just kicked butt. Finishing 1-1 on the Yamaha 250 F.
His first Moto saw great action with him working his up to first from about 5th. Casey Lytle took the holeshot. Photo by Steve Giberson, www.motodrive.com. Grant Langston and his Drs just don't know whats going to happen next weekend at Red Bud. He's going to give it one more try without surgery. It is possible he can continue on racing, we just won't know until Red Bud. Pat Schutte filled in for DC on the web's most important weekly column, Racerhead, on www.racerxill.com. He did great, check it out. The web is restless today: Lot of rumors are flying. Here's some poop to scoop: Rumor: MC will wear Thor
gear. Rumor: Lusk has a deal for
next year decided. Rumor: Ben Riddle will be
dropped by Suzuki. OK we dealt with those rumors, let's start some more. Find your own....
Any site that is cool enough to put this logo on it is worth a mention, no? Check out Doug Kim's www.trickcycles.com. This site has a ton of resource info on it already. Keep track and see how it goes. From Denny Hartwig at SFX: Jeremy McGrath is hungry to regain his EA Sports Supercross title. This week McGrath has been riding at Mammoth Mountain as part of his off-season training program. Rather than taking it easy, McGrath, who finished second in the 2001 season of EA SPORTS Supercross for only the second time in nine years, is dedicating his time off from racing to training. McGrath is slated to race the YZ250F four stroke this weekend in the 125cc class as well as his 250cc two stroke. From Dorito: Trevor Vines Wins Spot in Summer X Games SoBe/Factory Yamaha/Thor sponsored Trevor
Vines was in great form at the LXD Freeride Moto-X Championships X Games
qualifier in Colorado Springs, CO on June 1-2 taking the win on Saturday. Vines
didn't hold back at all when it came time for his run, his first trick being a Double Hand
Seat Grab over a 100 foot gap. Trevor went on to throw 14 more of the best tricks in his
arsenal including a Look Back Hart Attack, Double Saran to No Hand Lander, a McMetz,
Cliffhanger and ending with a perfect Steralizer over the 100 footer, a move that always
brings the screaming fans to their feet. Grant Langston's outdoor adventure, chapter three: Racer X has reported Grant didn't go for the surgery he talked about last weekend at Budd's Creek. He is feeliing better and wants to try rest and therapy for now. He will be at Red Bud, and if he feels patriotic on 4th of July weekend, he might race? If he salvages his season after all this, it will be truly remarkable. New Feature! Motonews has a new regular place for opinion polls. It's on the www.motonews.com page, or use this short cut. The complete results and standings for the Bel Ray/WML championships are up here. At the next outdoor national, Red Bud on July 1, Lusk
will have special Universal Studio graphics to promote Universal Pictures' and Amblin
Entertainment's Silly season is a little slow to start this year. Usually by round 5 we know at least some team changes. Typically the musical chairs have to wait until a few key riders make their move, then the rest falls into place. The biggest move of all is already decided, Carmichael to Honda in 2002. All that remains on this one is how and when they make the announcement. The word in the pits is Honda wants to keep Lusk, even though you would think RC would be a budget-buster. Sometimes too much silly season news can mess people up. Look at Ernesto Fonseca. We know McGrath Racing wants to add at least one 250 rider. At lot of people are assuming Ernie is already set to ride for MC next year, but its not a done deal. This kind of thing can mess up Ernie's options right now, when everyone is talking to everyone else about next year. Right now Ernie does not have an offer to ride for McGrath Racing in 2002.
MC on a YZ250F at Mammoth. Ryan Mahoney at www.photocross.net has practice photos up from Mammoth, he says Jeremy McGrath, Shae Bentley, Casey Lytle, Steve Lamson, Chris Gosselaar, Doug Dubach, Andrew Short, Spud Walters, Ty Davis are there, and they expect Shaun Palmer too. The race photos will be up for subscribers (his not ours) and practice photos are up for Slackers (hehe, good one). Red Bud Track and Trail in Buchanan, Mich., has inducted
Jeff Emig and Doug "Wheelie King"
Domokos into their Hall of Fame. Emig, a former supercross,
motocross, and U.S. Open champion, has won the overall at Red Bud five times throughout
his illustrious career, including three wins in-a-row starting in 1992 on a 125cc.
While Emig is from Riverside, Calif., the he sits number one in the hearts of Michigan
fans. The late Doug Domokos wasn't given the name "Wheelie King"; he
earned it. Domokos would often take on the challenge to ride the entire track on his
back wheel. Congratulations, Jeff Fonseca and Budd's Creek were in the news in Costa Rica's national paper La Nacion, here's the link.
There were so many riders at Budd's that said they didn't get to ride during the week due to illness or injury, one would wonder if they outnumbered the healthy ones. Not riding were Langston, Vuillemin, Pastrana (until friday, then he crashed), and Thain. Thain rode a lap at Budd's and stopped. You already know about Langston. Also, Buckelew and Roncada were sick last week. While the nationals get a much-needed break, there is plenty going on out west. The famous Mammoth Motocross is this week, with McGrath himself confirmed to race all classes, including a YZ250F in the 125 class. Pro Circuit's Casey Lytle and Shae Bentley should be there too as a warm up for their return to the nationals. Also this week, Glen Helen is hosting the Vintage Iron World Championships (www.glenhelen.com), June 21-24, including a motocross school with Bob Hannah! Also this week is the way cool Yamaha Race of Champions, June 23/24. Look for the who's who of moto legends to be there, including Jorges Jobe, who we saw at Southwick.
Budd's Creek People: "Hey! Put us on Motonews!" "OK" This weekend's People photos are up. The 125 and 250 Racing sections for Budd's are up this morning. Quotes from everyone are in, photos will be there later.
4-strokes made a lot of noise at Budd's Creek, and Larry Ward was second on his YZ250F, but Kawasaki took top honors. RC won (barely) and Mike Brown smoked em.
Photos from round three of the Bel Ray/WML Outdoor Motocross Championships round 3 are up here.
The weather is looking better for Budd's this morning, so far. Press is going to be hard to do on-line at Budd's. The tower is now all announcing gadgets and the transponder computers. At least you can check the transponder data in real-time (assuming all goes well) for the first time this weekend! Go to www.amaproracing.com and click on @thewire. Motonews and mxnationals.com will either get updates on site about 7:30 pm local time, or when the mediamobile gets back to Pittsburgh about 5am. Who's in/Who's out for Budd's Creek... IN: Akira Narita; The Japanese Suzuki rider
that did so well in the mud at High Point is back. He races Nationals here when he doesn't
have Nationals to race in Japan. It rained hard Saturday at Budd's. Saturday practice and qualifying were cancelled. The second WML moto was cancelled too. THQ and Gigex have partnered to release the brand new trailer for MX 2002
featuring Ricky Carmichael. This
trailer features gameplay from the upcoming Play Station 2 title as well as live action
shots of motocross superstars Mike Larocco, Kevin Windham,
Ezra Lusk, Carey Hart, Trevor Vines and Mike Jones doing what they do best. This
downloadable full screen trailer runs just over 2 minutes and weighs in at 18 MB. http://gigex.com/GetPackage/GetPackage.ASP?PackageId=0044600014&source=mx04
Arm pump isn't just for motorossers dept: Kurtis Roberts, Erion Racing's 2000 AMA 600cc Supersport Champion and 1999 and 2000 AMA Formula Xtreme Champion, had successful surgery this week on both arms for compartment syndrome. The condition typically leads to "arm pump" while racing and results in numbness and loss of strength in the hands. The surgery was performed Arthur Ting, M.D. at the Fremont Surgery Center. Today is round three of the Bel Ray/WML Outdoor Motocross Championships. Check the Motonews.com special WML racing section late today for photos. Check here late Saturday for an update on who is in and who is out for Budd's Creek this weekend. So far we don't know about Voss, Lytle, and Lamson. Langston is in, and I'm pretty sure Hughes is. Smets, Bolley or Chiodi will definitely not be at Budd's. Saturday is round three of the Bel Ray/WML Outdoor Motocross Championships. Stefy Bau will have less to worry about since the Steffi Lauer of Germany was just here for two rounds, which she won. Bau is still on her quest to qualify for a Sunday at a national. At Southwick she missed it by three places. Budd's is a good track for her, so she might make it. Pastrana had a fun set of very pink No fear gear with him at Southwick so he could mess with Grant, but since Grant was riding injured they decided to not rub it in. Maybe we will see it again this year sometime. They didn't want up taking pictures of it yet. Watch out for a Mike Brown/Pastrana classic this weekend. Grant won't be 100%, but Brown does very well at Budd's, and its local for Travis. It should be good. Each week the 125 class has had more than enough drama and surprises. You have to wonder if someone else will be Bonds or Narita this weekend.
This is the crowd of media that was watching the 125s line up at Southwick. The only one not wearing shorts is DC on the far left. What up with that? TV guys have to hide their knees?
Here's the link for the Mammoth Motocross races starting next week. This will be an off weekend for Motonews.com but not for photographer Ryan Mahoney of www.photocross.net who will be shooting digital in his first gig for Cycle News. KIDS WB! SALUTES "TOP POPS" DURING SPECIAL SATURDAY MORNING
TRIBUTE TO FATHERS DAY ON JUNE 16 More good news for Buddy Duffy, here's the latest: Buddy came home finally Wednesday 6-13, he walked out the hospital doors proudly
with his walker, only aided by the slight touch of his grandfather at 12:00 noon.
Leaving the re-hab hospital well ahead of the four month predicted stay. He
will begin out-patient therapy on Monday June 18th. From Pascal at Dorna: All the fans of Motocross will be happy with the (very) good news coming from
south of France : the International MX of Beaucaire (Gard) will be back in the 2002
calendar, after a short break as no race was organized this year on this famous GP track.
The 2002 event will take place on February 24th !
Diane at Brightworks custom painting reports they have a new web site: http://brightworks.racemail.com Check out www.langstonracing.com for an audio of Grant's interview right after he finished the second moto at Southwick. He was fourth in the moto but the folks at the end stopped him to talk anyway (they usually just stop the top three). Gerald sent in a report to www.mxlarge.com also. OK, just ONE more note about the comment Grant made last year that got taken out of contest and everyone thought Grant was saying he would win Southwick. This is from Rob Andrews, the quote that started all that was, "I tell you, if there's one national I'm going to win next year it's going to be Southwick." This was during a discussion on Grant's sand riding. The first set of wallpaper images from Motocross 2001 are up! Check here: There are plenty of team web sites to check out, but if you haven't visited Motoworld of el Cajon's lately you missed something, check it out. Salt Lake City got quite an economic boost from the first-ever EA Sports Supercross held there in April. SFX did this press release with some interesting numbers. There is plenty of news on Mototalk! MT'rs are always on top of things like: -Tallon Vohland is still out with
complications due to concussions.
Cannondale has begun shipping the first model from its 2002 motorsports line, the Cannibal ATV. The new viper red Cannibal benefits from improved manufacturing efficiencies that Cannondale has made at its Bedford, Pennsylvania, factory...(More) From Mototalk: Remember that tonite is the start of the contest on www.NoShy1.com. Prizes include signed posters, signed Dreamco Extreme Bears, and a really cool 1st prize that has to remain a secret for now. Contest runs from tonite at 7:00pm CST to June 19th. See the site for details!
With all the hoopla over the title chase in the 125 class and the GP champs in the 250 class, it was too easy to overlook an amazing day for Keith Johnson, a local favorite at Southwick who finished 4th overall with a 3-7! Salute! Johnson is on 3D Racing/e-z wider. Check out www.motoedge.com for a Smith Warpstars goggle report. Chris Williams figured out how to pull the string on the lens that does something and he wants you to see how smart he is. In case you missed it, the list of visiting Euros who will race Budd's Creek this weekend is down to zero. Smets was going back anyway, and Bolley said Sunday he would go home too. Chiodi has a back injury to wait out so he won't be there. Vuillemin plans on racing, and you won't be able to keep Langston away, not after what he endured last weekend. Brad should have plenty of Grant news on his website (www.langstonracing.com) this week, including an audio interview right after the second moto Sunday. Also look for one with Ernesto Fonseca on www.fonsecaracing.com. Some more Southwick notes, Buckelew crashed out for the weekend Saturday. Lamson practiced but pulled out because the rib he broke at Hangtown was still hurting. Journalist Thadius Main was a no-show, something about a car??? If you are getting burned on TV schedule changes, BJ Smith at Motoworld.com is on your side. He keeps up with the changes and does his best to keep the Motoworld TV list current. He sent this:
OK, forget all that about Langston not racing Southwick. He did it! After skipping practice and thinking about his series lead disappearing, Langston decided to send his bike to the line, even though he wasn't even sure he would last the parade lap. He ended up tied with Travis for points after moto 1, and he dropped just 8 points after moto two. The second moto was even tougher. His shoulder was swollen and he again didn't know if he could race. He ended up with a remarkable 4th, even though he could hard ride towards the end and had to "goon ride" to hang on.
Langston got his shoulder taped up so he can tough it out to keep his title hopes alive. Its too early to confirm the 2001 MXdN team, but you know Mike LaRocco's name will come up. Last year he wanted a real 500 if he were to go, but for one reason or the other things didn't come together. This year however, if LaRocco gets the nod, he would be very interested in riding the CRF450R. So if RC is going to Honda, why no big announcement? It's not much a secret anymore, but people aren't talking too much about it-kinda. You haven't heard anything because the people who plan these things haven't decided how to do it yet. For the fastest motocrosser in the world to change brands is a big deal. You don't just mention it during a podium interview or something. RC's camp wants to do something cool that doesn't mess up Kawasaki's party either. After all he won a Supercross championship for them and he is a top pick for the outdoors again, so they don't need all that overshadowed by this kind of thing. There is talk of what will happen to Lusk next year. RC's deal is sure to be a budget buster, but RC and Honda still want to keep him if they can find a way. Lusk and RC are good friends and it would be good to have them racing and training together. Yamaha wouldn't mind having him either and Vuillemin's contract is up, but Yamaha would be nuts to let him (or Ferry) go right now. Vuillemin is happy at Yamaha and wants to stay. That means if the Honda thing doesn't work out he may have to talk to Kawasaki, since they will have an opening.
Don't go starting any rumors. Smets really didn't have time to press for 2002 deals, but if anything happens, an outdoor-only KTM deal looks likely.
OK, so much for the Langston/Pastrana showdown. Grant crashed in the second practice Saturday and walked off the track holding his shoulder. The word before he went to the Dr was separated shoulder and possible ligament damage. Bummer. When the Pastrana camp heard the news they were really disappointed. They wanted good racing. Bolley, Smets, Chiodi, and Mark De Reuver were all practicing and looked OK, nothing special to report.
Smets and his mechanic Pete Lesoto at AMA checkin. Smets has never raced a national in the US, but he did do Daytona in 1995. KTM sent a bike over for him, but it is not his works bike. It has an electric starter. Smets is a cool guy to interview, listen to www.motoworld.com tomorrow.
Ryan Hughes and Jim Sanderson with the new MXdN T-shirt the AMA did. Who's in/Who's out: IN: Steve Lamson OUT: Grant Langston (unless you hear different)
Scott Taylor got RC hooked up with Mobilevision. They will have this motorhome for him at the rest of the nationals. (No we can't use it for a media center, I already asked.) Showdown at Southwick: The talk of the weekend so far at Southwick is the showdown in the 125 class between world champion Grant Langston and defending 125 champion Travis Pastrana. There has been a lot of talk about this race, and both really want to win it.
Keith Higginbotham is making it as a full time freestyler, press release GOBig! Entertainment does action sports videos, press release. "Speed is not a problem..." MC answered a lot of questions on his web site, www.nacnac.com. Yes, he is racing Mammoth!
Stefan Everts at the Radson Stadium Cross in Genk, Belgium last weekend. Speedvision.com has a full Meyer report. The Southwick "USGP" national this weekend may be the most anticipated race of the series. The visiting Euros and the return of Doug Henry for the weekend are good for the photo business! Also the interest the Euros have in racing here gives the US series a media boost, even though US Supercross and motocross are already very popular abroad. Grant Langston is still the talk of the 125 class, and a showdown with last year's winner Travis Pastrana is expected. The 250 class has had a different winner every week so far, and so far none of them have been RC. Still RC is the favorite to win because he is RC. Somehow a comment by Langston about Southwick got a little twisted. He didn't say he would win Southwick. He was asked last year if he thought he could win a national in the US, and he said probably, and if he did Southwick would be the likely one (That's because he does well in sand). If you haven't added his web site to your list of regular stops yet, its time to add www.langstonracing.com. Grant's dad Gerald has plenty to say, and this is his place to do it. OMS is now representing Yamaha of Troy. Here is the press release. Shyla Wesly has some surprises planned on here Jeff Emig fan page at http://www.noshy1.com/. There will be a contest June 12-19 that Emig helped he with. From DORNA: The THQ US Open is the kind of race you have to plan way in advance. This year's will be Oct 12-14 and a lot of new races have been added. To get up to speed on this year's richest motorcycle race, Mnews has added this special feature to preview the USSX. There are two new interviews by Jim Kimball up: Pedro Gonzales, and Alley Semar.
Rich Price of MXAmerica newspaper pointed out that #428, James McNeill, qualified for a national on his first attempt. This was at High Point. Racer X magazine circulation is growing. With the next issue Safeway, Waldenbook, Publix and two Kroger divisions are picking it up. People are still talking about the Langston/Bonds battle at Hangtown on Mototalk. Here's a photo from the first moto when Bonds just got by Jesseman and Ward. More road trip photos are up. Check out part 4 of the 5-week Supercross/Motocross Engine Ice Road Trip! The weather.com site says a possibilty of isolated thunderstorms exists for Southwick thie weekend. Will they organize something that involves Supercross? Depends. The Motor Sports folks at SFX are already twisting some arms. Some cool news about a site on the Motonews "A" List:
With the Internet being the first place that race fans and motorcycle enthusiasts turn to
for the most up-to-date information, MotorcycleUSA.com (www.motorcycle-usa.com) has become one of the top
destinations. Last month, MotorcycleUSA.com hit a real milestone becoming one the
ten most popular motorcycle sites when over 200,000 unique users visited it's site.
