Lots of Fresh News and more Photos on TFS emag 2000

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 07/01/00:

A new face appeared in the Kawasaki pits at Southwick.  Working on Ward's bike was Billy Pelts, who has raced BMX, Speedway, and MX with Team Green.  Then he raced sprints (something with four wheels), but he has been with Kawasaki for quite a while.  He used to race Ward in the old days and was Emig's roomie until recently.

Motodude took these shots of the new Yamaha YZ250F at the Yamaha Race of Champions day.

Cannondale is still tinkering with the new bike.  Don't look for them at Red Bud this weekend.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/30/00:

There is big news from the GP world:  The Action Group press office released the Tentative 2001 GP Motocross schedule, and confirmed all 16 events will be 125/250/500 triple headers and they will have a single moto format.  This single moto format change has created a stir of opposition, and should be interesting to watch.

If you didn't see the latest Team Green News, track one down and check it out.  It features digital photos from some out-of-control spectator.  See if you can tell the difference.  They have great coverage of WML Championship racing.  Kawasaki's Team Green strongly supports women's motocross and has four top riders.

Injury report - our own contributing report Denise Conroy-Galley crashed hard on her Mtn bike last night and broke teeth and face pieces.  Yes she had on her helmet!  Her hubby Todd wrote a crash report on Mototalk.  You can e-mail her at Galley@Adelphia.net.

At Southwick our cub reporter for a day Chris Tedesco (www.motoxcentral.com) cruised trhe pits to ask the mover and shakers of Supercross/motocross if the current gang of French riders gets enough respect from the American fans and press.  Here is what people told him.

Steve Lamson talks about his return to the 125 class and last year's season on a 250 in this exclusive Steve Lamson interview by Jim Kimball.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/28/00:

Ezra not sure about Red Bud yet:

Ezra has been to two doctors and had a "CT scan". They say his wrist is not broke and has just a sprain in the ligaments. He is still sore and he will try to ride later this week to determine if he can race this weekend.  He wants to be able to came back with winning in mind, so if he's not 100%, we might not see him Sunday.   Honda is still looking good this weekend, they have both Windham and Tortelli, who finished on the podium at Budd's.

06babe4.jpg (23048 bytes) (L) Rachel Out.   The most babe-alicious trophy hunni's outdoor nationals gig is up.  The cover babe for fitness magazines has a busy career.  I miss her already!

(R) Red Bud is this weekend.  Vohland was 2-2 last year, but now RC is spanking the 250 class.  Vohland gets another chance to wear two hats.

06racingis.jpg (27522 bytes)

Also on a new project - our excellent PR friend Dorina Groves is leaving Chaparral Motor Sports.   She will still be doing PR. We will know more later.  Dorina was behind some of the the year's biggest events like the Jimmy Button Benefit Auction and the big charity golf tournament just before Glen Helen. Dorina has made quite an impression on the sport already this year, she will do very well.

This is an 8X10 (one of just three) of that Travis Pastrana heel-clicker in the second moto at Southwick.  Cycle News ran the photo too in it's Southwick report.  It's signed by Travis, Roger DeCoster, "The Professor" Gary Bailey, and Travis's dad.  Who wants it?

DV racing YZ250F.  Uh huh.   Where do these rumors come from?  At Budd's I asked Yamaha's Steve Butler about DV at Mammoth and he said he would race a Yamaha of Troy 125, a YZ250, and a YZ426.  I guess the net had him on a 4-stroke 250 against the 125s.  Who is making this stuff up?

A few weeks ago the TFS emag daily went way out on a limb and reported Chaparral wouldn't have a Supercross team in 2001.    For round two of this, the crackpots at the rumor mill on www.PACEMotorsports.com, reported on their "Wide Open" section that a rumor was going around the Chaparral transporter was for sale.  If you haven't been checking "Wide Open" regularly, check it out.  It's nice to see the corporate folks behind the Big Show having some fun.

Who was saying RC doesn't smile enough?  See what you think...

Thanks to Mototalker Geoff Meyer and www.Speedvision.com, here are GP reports from Traversini and Sweden.

Also from Meyer, here's an article about GP rider's opinions on the proposed one-moto GP format for next year.  (Hey didn't they have a three-moto format just a few years ago?)

Here's a report on the British Motocross Championships, Round 4, by Ray Archer.

Jeeez, get a life Meyer, www.Speedvision.com has a really good article about Tallon Vohland.

The web will have first-rate photos from Mammoth.   Ryan Mahoney's www.Photocross.net calls Mammoth home, so this is his local race.  TFS emag met Ryan at the Anaheim Supercross and was impressed with his killer photos done with a Nikon 950.   The Olympus-loyal emag also tried one after the Oylmpus C2500 took a dump at Minneapolis.  It worked out great (after I asked Ryan WTF are all those buttons for?).  Most of the TFS stuff you see in Cycle News is done with the Nikon.
Ryan's site is also a pay site. Doh!  What nerve huh?

Mammoth results are on www.MammothMotocross.com.

Jeff Emig did DC's Racerhead column this week since DC was busy getting married or something.

(R) Long time Mototalk regular 92CR sends in this photo of a future national champion, Josh Graber.   OK, if he doesn't win a title maybe he can be a regular on Mototalk 10.

Today's wedding is Chris Williams (www.Motoedge.com)  and Korie Hagemann, who are taking the plunge in Wyoming.  Since the photo guy went AWOL, someone will be drawing pictures of the event like those old court sketches.

DC and Shannon Dolly are getting married tonight!  Somewhere down in the moto-hell known as Morgantown, West by-God Virginia, the two Racer X'rs are taking the plunge.   Congrats!

Tomorrow Chris WIlliams from Cannondale is getting married too, this one in Wyoming.  I hope he can find a replacement photohound, because his scheduled photo guy is spectating from the Sewickley Valley Hospital, NW of Pittsburgh.

The TFS emag's Teams 2000 list has been updated to include what is up with Lusk and Bentley.

Expect to see one or maybe two new Supercross venues in 2001.   PACE has been doing frequent updates called "Wide Open" on www.PACESupercross.com to have some fun and keep you interested in the big show.

Some of the top GP riders are not to pleased with the possibility of the triple-header weekends going to a one-moto format.  The triple headers make great economic sense because the teams can just budget one bog tour instead of three, but going to one-moto will be a significant difference.

You want to see what a web site for a Factory Gastroenterologist would look like, check out Dr Fusco's www.gihealth.com.  All you young folks can see what you have to look forward too!  Dr Fusco checked out the official TFS silencer today.

Our good buddy Chris Tedesco has bumped yours truly from the featured spot on the web site www.MotoXCentral.com since he took his own photos at Budd's.  Doh!  Chris did a great job, check it out and send him a note.

Let's start another rumor dept:

DSCN4662.jpg (30091 bytes)
What's up?  How's the bike?

Things have been pretty slow here at TFS emag headquarters.  The TFS emag 2000, this daily, and MXnationals.com had to get moved off a cranky laptop that just stopped working.   After Budd's, Denny Stephenson and I had to give up waiting for the junker to load up the software to do the on-site race review for www.MXNationals.com. Sorry for the delays, it is nice to again have something that works pretty good.

cn05.jpg (81726 bytes)
Roncada celebrates his 1-1 at Budd's.

Most of the moto-universe is having a blast at Mammoth.   Rumors are still flying about MC racing but at Budd's Larry Brooks said he was just there riding.   According to Yamaha's Steve Butler, DV's 125 ride will be a Yamaha of Troy 125.  Of course maybe at the last minute he will show up on the secret Honda 4-stroke Lusk was supposed to ride at Glen Helen.  haha!

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/20/00:
Sick day, yuk.
tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/19/00:

The big race blowout this weekend is Mammoth, which will keep you updated on www.MammothMotocross.com.

Let's start a rumor dept:

Roncada to ride Yamaha 250 4-stroke in 2001!  -  Maybe.

Silly Season should start soon.  One of the  riders most in demand should be Yamaha of Troy's Stephane Roncada.   He has already said he wants to move to 250 Supercross for 2001, but not sure about outdoors.  He has ridden for Phil Alderton's Troy teams in the US since 1997.

Roncada should be a shoe-in for a ride in the Yamaha Factory rig in 2002, unless someone else grabs him first.

That leaves 2001 with Yamaha wanting to debut the 250 4-stroke (legal for 125 racing) in the best light, and they will want to show off a blue bike with a #1 on it in east Supercross.  It just makes sense.  Put Roncada on the 250 four-stroke.

DSCN4594.jpg (52227 bytes)

Le next Doug Henry?
tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/18/00:

RC re-took the points lead at Budd's Creek with a convincing 1-1 sweep of the 250 class that featured a battle for the series lead and a last-lap pass on Tortelli in moto two.   And stop saying RC doesn't smile enough when he wins.  When he went to get his trophy and shake the fizzy he was one happy camper.  It sounds like a cliche but he said the crowd cheering him on on the last lap of moto two when he passed Tortelli was loud and motivating.

05rc01.jpg (72279 bytes)

Roncada ripped both motos in the 125 class, Pastrana was 2-2 and riding with a weak ankle.

Lusk didn't race because he hurt his wrist during the week.  He also missed out the the AMA's MXdN poster that was shot Sunday.

The MXdN nominees are:
Lusk, Carmichael, Windham, LaRocco, Pastrana, Lamson and Vohland.

MC is up at Mammoth this week, but according to Larry Brooks he is just riding.  Vuillemin is racing mammoth, and he will be racing a Yamaha of Troy YZ 125, and YZ 250, and a YZ 426.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/17/00:

Dang, bring the umbrella to Budd's Creek this weekend.  www.weather.com says storms.

Last year Windham and Vohland won in the mud.  Kelly Smith almost won the second moto but RC caught him.  Considering Smith's awesome ride in the mess at High Point, he should be on your short list of top finishers.  Tortelli did good in the mud last year too, and Vuillemin is Vuillemin.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/16/00:
Also injured:  Jimmy Wilson, Arenacross fast guy.  He broke his foot at Southwick and this will mess up his qualifying for Loretta's.  Major bummer.  You can send him your best wishes at jimmy383@aol.com.

The whole TFS emag Daily (free stuff) and the TFS emag 2000 (members section) are getting completely re-organized.  There will be some broken links and hopefully nothing more until it is done.  The two sites will share a common top border.  Most of the changes aren't that visible.  The re-organization is done to make the whole thing faster to update on this end.  Hopefully it won't get anyone lost when it's results time for roun 5 of the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships at Budd's.

Special thanks to graphics guy Steve Densmore for making the new top banner.  The one up now is temporary.  The new one will have a different slogan so it doesn't look like I'm messing with our main man MP over at the moto Romper Room.

MOTODUDE"S Excellent GP Adventure

Our own long-time regular Motodude (Paul Brenchley) has been kicking around Europe speeding on the freeways, hanging with the press, chatting with Ryno and Wyatt Seals, and in general waiting to get the hell out of there so he can get a decent meal.  Here's his excellent report:

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/14/00:

It looks like a moto-magazine is feuding with Suzuki.    The feud was confirmed on their web site (the mags, not Suzuki's).  I guess they are just bored.

This weekend's national at Budd's will be killer.  RC, Lusk, LaRocco, Lamson (three times), Vohland, and Windham have all won there.  Vuillemin has raced there once, at the USGP last year.  It might rain again.  www.weather.com says scattered thunderstorms for Saturday.
(R) Three-time Budd's Creek 125 winner Steve Lamson is just 4 wins away from Carmichael and Barnett's 125 record of 25 wins each.
DSCN4053.jpg (73741 bytes)
THQ's web site, www.thq.com, ran a short review of the Southwick national, which makes sense since their man RC won.   The site probably gets more hits in a day than all of Motocross gets in a week, so more exposure can't hurt.  Their site has a link back to the official outdoor series web site, www.MXNationals.com.

Gotcha!

Brandes In

The buzz about Brandes leaving racing isn't true.

Why the rumor?

As far as TFS emag can tell, someone started a rumor, and when a friend of his asked via e-mail he confirmed when he wrote back and said he was sick of injuries and the people and stuff like that.

A couple of days later he wrote a second time and said that was just BS - we should know better, huh?

Actually he was just covering for his deal to ride GPs, which was secretly worked out April 1.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/07/00:

People who know are saying the news that Brandes is bailing isn't true.

Speedvision.com has more on the June 4 race at Southwick where King, Dowd, and Vuillemin were warming up for Sunday's national there.

Our buddy Brad from Mototalk reports the 2001 Yamahas will be posted on www.yamaha-motor.com thursday morning.  BTW, the photo you saw on Mototalk of the 2001 YZ250F four stroke was on www.motorcycledaily.com.

The buzz about Brandes leaving racing is true.  He is bailing.

DSCN3458.jpg (71018 bytes)

Hey, how did Kelly Smith's goggles get that clean after a mud moto?

Here is a killer article about Southwick on the www.moto338.com web site.  Check out "Where a Milk Shake is a Frappe."   The article is a bit dated (1995), but it's cool anyway.  TFS Trivia:   Before Motonews, TFS or anything like that, I was a at Southwick in 1995.  My current bike (CR 250) was in the national, but the pilot was by buddy Ricky Palmer, not me.  He didn't qualify due to first turn pileups, but the bike still has the AMA stickies on it!

If you are anywhere close to Southwick this Sunday, June 4, check out the NESC race.  Plenty of pros should be on hand to get ready for the June 11 national.

tfs_emag3.gif (420 bytes) 06/02/00:

Stefy Bau is still having ankle problems from that crash back in San Diego.  She is going back to Italy and may have to have surgery.  She may not make it back for Budd's Creek.

Jim Kimball from the AMA sent in four cool interviews:  Lee McCollum, David Vuillemin, Chris Gosselaar, and Shayne King.   All are on the TFS emag 2000.

There is no National this weekend, but TFS emag 2000 will jet off to Southwick a week early to see who will be there practicing for the June 11 AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships round 4.  Vuillemin is going early to learn the track and set his bike up, "It will be fun," was his message to TFS World Headquarters in Pittsburgh.  Pat Muras and the Yamaha rig are already there.

Another web site to surf:  Larry Lawrence is writing for www.moto1.net. Check out the race coverage.

You can add www.pacesupercross.com to your daily web stops.   Even with the 2000 series over, they just started a daily update called Wide Open.    Their Freestyle series starts in late July.

Randy Lawrence Update

According to our volunteer mountain bike racing correspondent Steve G, MC's wrench dislocated his shoulder a few time recently, including once while pushing MC's bike to the line at Glen Helen.

He had surgery, and will miss most, if not all of his mountain bike racing this season.

The first motorcycle:

Most sources claim that the first motorcycle was built by Gottlieb Daimler, an assistant to Nicholaus Otto (who invented the Otto cycle, a kind of engine). In 1885, Daimler added a gasoline motor to a wooden bicycle, replacing the pedals. Daimler's motorbike was
propelled by an engine, but it was not the first motor-driven cycle.

Actually, the first motorbike was built seventeen years earlier in 1868. It was not powered by a gasoline engine, but by a steam engine. Its builder was Sylvester Roper. His steam-powered bike did not catch on, but it anticipated many modern motorbike features,
including the twisting-handgrip throttle control.

History of the motorcycle:
