Branden Jesseman has a suspected dislocated wrist and is going to see his hand specialist at UPMC Monday.
Business: Letter from Giuseppe Luongo on GPs
Chad Reed is 23 points ahead of KW for the AMA SX series points, and Damon Huffman is just 2 points ahead of Grant Langston for THQ World Supercross GP points. Evans slipped to third in that series after a couple of bad nights. The racing in the 250 class between Reed and KW is just as good if not better than the RC/Reed battles from the end of SX last year. At this point Reed cannot afford to have a bad night, and those 10 points KW lost at Phoenix really matter. Honda's appeal of the "10-pointer" will take place in Ohio Feb 10.
With veterans like Ivan Tedesco, Stephane Roncada and Travis Preston leading the points in the 125 west, the top rookie is Mach 1 Yamaha's Eric Nye in 11th. His best finish so far was a 8th at A3. This week's 125 "laps of glory" went to Kris Keefer, #706 on a KTM, who led part of a 125 qualifier at A3.

The Wonder Warthog story just keeps getting better! During the broadcast of A3, they had a few clips of Scott Davis flying the now-infamous cape! What next? Should Terry Boyd wear it and run across the track?

A loud, energetic crowd got to see KW and Reed put the super back in supercross at A3! The two went at it again, racing closer and better than even last weekend. KW won it when Reed tipped over in the berm before the finish double. LaRocco was totally on the gas and caught the two, but after Reed got back up, he passed for second again. LaRocco got close on the last lap, which prompted Reed to turn and shake his finger at him. Huffman was impressive and stayed ahead of DV for 4th.

Reed points back at LaRocco after the main, and he uses the proper finger. 2004 is all about good manners.
The 125 race was just as good, with Roncada leading Tedesco most of the main. The two even bumped a couple of times, none of them worth any points though. Preston caught them and passed Roncada. Tedesco won his 5th straight. Ramsey went down in the first turn and caught up to 9th.

Wonder Warthog Racing's debut was a blast. Lot of privateers signed up to run a sticker and get their signup back for making the night show. The best part was #851 Scott Davis, who rode his semi in a full-on Warthog jersey with cape! The AMA didn't notice because it was cold and riders went to the gate in jackets. The Warthog had asked was the jersey/cape OK but there was a misunderstanding and the AMA thought he was just asking about a plain jersey with WW on it. Anyhoo, that won't happen again, and a great moment in supercross is in the books! CCE is totally behind the WW program and made the superhero and his sidekick Bauer welcome, and the AMA likes it too, well they did until the Scott Davis thing but they should get over it. Whatever. The arrival of WW made the SX more fun, and put a lot of money back into privateer's pockets. Check out the WWR site for all the latest!

If you have been to a supercross this year, you probably heard Terry Boyd say "'Out of the Ordinary' crispety, crunchety, peanut buttery® one-of-a-kind Butterfinger" or something like that. Yea, yea, go ahead and laugh, but Butterfinger sponsors the holeshot awards, and Nate Adams. Here's a section on Nate Adams on Butterfinger's web site.

That thing about MC going to work for Honda as a coach-not true. MC goes to Honda and rides the test track and does what he wants, but he's not working there-technically. He even rode Ernie's bike last week, just to, you know, keep it warm.
CCE is planning a special gathering at the show opening Saturday night in honor of Jason Ciarletta.

False: MC will fill in at Honda at A3. Won't happen.

Matt Shue update: Matt has surgery on his hip and was released from the hospital Sunday, then his hip popped out again and he had to go back for surgery a second time. Major bummer. His other injuries were his shoulder, one rib, his liver, and lung. Sheesh.
Tomorrow is the first "Editor's Challenge," with the new "MX Unleashed" game, which will put media folks against each other and pros that are set for press dayt, like LaRocco and Preston, probably more. It should be cool, and will we see which Cycle News guy is all talk or not..
Suzuki is using Bridgestones this weekend, same as they did in San Diego. The team has a deal with Michelin, but sheet happens. Actually tire switching is not that uncommon. RC won Minneapolis on Bridgestones 2 seasons ago, and one team that had a deal with Maxxis took them off and ran Dunlops. So, just about every tire company has been a victim of the customer looking for greener grass (or more traction). Michelin is working on a new tire for the team already.

From Doc Bodnar: Due to the tragedy at the San Diego Supercross, tonight's THE MOTO SHOW with Doc Bodnar and Elrod, will be cancelled. We would like to take this time to offer our sincerest condolences to the Ciarletta family for the loss of their son, Jason. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of sorrow.
A lot of people are talking about doing some support for the Ciarletta family. This came from Sharon Richards, who is with OMS Sports (day job) and the Women's Auxillary of SX/MX: "The outpouring of kindness and concern for the Ciarletta Family has been astonishing! There are truly wonderful folks in the Motocross community. The Women's Auxiliary of Motocross & Supercross will gladly facilitate a Memorial Fund for Jason Ciarletta. However, we must first meet with a member of Jason's family to set forth some guidelines, etc. We are trying to arrange a meeting with the family as I write this. As you can imagine, there are many arrangements/decisions that the family will have to make over the course of the next few days – a meeting with us may take a couple of days. As soon as we get more information, we will surely pass it on. Please keep the Ciarletta Family in your prayers."

Tragedy at San Diego: Jason Ciarletta, 19, of Riverside, Ca lost his life in a 125 qualifier crash. The sport was stunned by the news. It was the first fatality in 31 years for professional supercross. The incident happened in the Saturday afternoon qualifiers. Ciarletta's bike fell on him and caused fatal injuries. Clear Channel issued a brief statement to the press, then Doc Bodnar read the statement over the webcast just before the press conference.

The southern California mini scene is exciting and fun.
The 2004 Mini 4-Stroke Challenge at El Cajon Friday night went really well. Rider and spectator turnout was strong. Guy Cooper, Pingree, Brian Miller, and much of southern California's very strong mini scene was there, including the whole Sano crew-plus Five-O and Hanebrink. There was a well-lit vendor row and lots of displays of mini goodies. This mini thing just keeps getting stronger and cooler all the time. It's a true movement, and part of the fun is how companies are popping up all over trying all kids of things. Top pros are having fun on minis. MC himself likes to race his 50 and is really into it. It's like watching MX's golden age all over again. Check it out.
OK, the mini MX went well except for Randy Lawrence. He was injured in practice and spent the night in a hospital. No details have been released but people say he will be OK.

The first half of the 250 main at A2 was one of the best races in a long time. KW led, then DV caught him and tried to make a pass stick, then Reed caught both of them and all three raced together for a while. Result: 1) Reed, 2) KW, 3) DV. Here's a quick summary.

The 125 class was great too. Preston led, then battled with Roncada and Tedesco. Ramsey went down when he ran into Roncada's wheel. 1) Tedesco, 2) Preston, 3) Roncada.

Steve Whitelock and Yamaha team manager Jim Perry.
AMA Supercross/Motocross series manager Steve Whitelock received 600 emails about the flap in Phoenix! There is plenty of room to debate the KW decision-why now, why KW, why points, why not do nothing-but the truth of the matter is the factory teams met with Whitelock in December and discussed both rough riding and penalties and making tracks safer (well, easier and hopefully safer) so no one has to go into the Las Vegas finals with replacement riders or none at all. The factories were in agreement that the rough passing needed to stop and understood that the AMA would do more about it this year. So, Phoenix should not have been a surprise, even though there is plenty of it that is open for debate in a sport, like there always is. Whitelock did warn the riders in two riders meetings that rough riding would lead to a penalty.

KW won a controversial Phoenix supercross after a takeout that sent Vuillemin off the track on the first lap. A lot will be said about this one all week. KW had the holeshot in the main and DV made an aggressive move past him in the second turn. In the very next turn, KW came in hot and bumped DV off the track. KW ran off with the win, Reed had a weak start and caught up to second, but he was too far back to catch KW. It was his first win since Dallas 2000. KW defended himself in the press conference, and was questioned by the media and DV's trainer David Bailey, who was pretty upset about it. In a strange move, the AMA docked KW 10 points, according to Bauer who went into the pits after the AMA met with team managers.
So what next?
-Don't miss it on TV.
-Watch Mototalk to see what DV has to say about it.
-Watch David Bailey's site to see what he has to say about it.
-Watch for an AMA press release Monday.
-Watch the debate on is this the kind of thing the AMA needs to be doing, and why now? Isn't rough riding part of supercross, and all of a sudden its supposed to stop?
In the 125 class, Pro Circuit's 4-stroke 250Fs again completely dominated. Tedesco and Roncada both won heats again, and Tedesco is now 2 for 2. Pro Circuit had to work extra hard this year to get the new 250F up to Pro Circuit standards, and so far, Mitch's crew has really proven themselves. They haven't lost a heat, and led almost every lap, maybe all of them! Their teammate Matt Walker crashed out of the main (bummer).

Doc Bodnar's In/Out for Phoenix is updated above. Here's a reminder on the importance of rider privacy and all that: Motonews does not use information from riders that stop by the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center until they agree it is OK for Bodnar to release the information. This is to avoid rumors (always a problem with injuries) and to make sure all the riders know they won't read about their stop to the med center unless they say so. In a competitive sport, people naturally won't want to let their rivals know when they are not 100%. If we posted every little thing, rider's wouldn't want to stop by and get treated. This is what we want to avoid. So, if you are a racer and want to see Doc Bodnar, stop by. We are not lurking around the med center taking notes. If someone sees you walk off the track holding your shoulder, that is fair to report. When you get to the med center, its private.

Some quick Anaheim notes:
-Yamaha swept the podium, as predicted by Mototalker Cobra12. That guy must know something.
-Anaheim aired next day on ABC, with RC as guest commentator.
-Another sellout according to CCE's press release.
-Kawasaki 250Fs won both heats and the 125 main.
-With no RC (but signing autographs), MC, Bubba, or Pastrana, a lot of people mentioned it felt like something was missing.
-Chad Reed is the new boss in town. It's a little wierd because fans would respond more if they saw him wrestle a championship away from RC. He won't have the chance to show them he can do it since RC is out. That should make for a blockbuster series in 2005, but for now people all we have is "what if?"
-Langston should be OK after a wild getoff in the main. So far the report is he just got bruised up.
-People are already asking if Reed could run the series, just like MC almost did in 1996.
-Erin Bates debut as floor announcer went well.
-Demos were set up for THQ's "MX Unleashed" game, which is coming out in Feb.
-The AMA has a killer new semi.
-Turnout was really good at the Dave and Buster's get together Friday night.

The first race with mandated unleaded fuel went by without much mention at all. The predicted death of 2-stroke engines due to the fuel change hasn't happened in the 250 class. In fact, some 250 riders are abandoning 4-strokes. In the 250 main at Anaheim, the only 4-strokes were Huffman, KW, Voss, Thomas, and Stiles. The opposite happened in the 125 class though. There were only a handful of 125 2-strokes, but that is because there are more 250Fs available and the teams are pushing them, not specifically because of unleaded fuel. If there were no unleaded rule, riders would still want 250Fs.
