Report Card
Here is some artwork by Mototalker/photohound "Toe,"
who used a lot of big words in one message: "Let me
Empower you people with my ability to think outside the box.....The leverage
used in today's proactive message board's shows a mindset that is on the
fast track to a solid bottom line. The
Synergy that is needed for so many people to create a benchmark game plan of
working together with a knowledge base that knocks any other moto message
board out of the ballpark is a result driven attitude that can only be
though of at the end of the day as a win win scenario.
To touch base on the client focus of this message board, one would
have to be out of the loop not to see that mototalk is the benchmark for all
other moto message boards.... with 24/7 chat and its core competencies of
the newest and most provocative press releases, it is easily a strategic fit
for major players in the moto world to come visit here, not to mention a
value added feel that is taken off line and into the sx and national arena's
around the country.
So make it your best practice to revisit this site as often as possible
to get the most possible out of your day." Toe's

Well after 6
years of running on wwwboard software, Mototalk
is about to get an upgrade to something contemporary. Mototalk has
been a holdout among moto message boards by running the old software so long
it looks retro already. Still its the the hangout of choice for moto
heavies, journalists, and lurkers who know where to get the straight scoop
without a lot of nonsense.

Dorna Announces 2003 World
SX Schedule.
Since we have been saying the AMA/CCE
split is not going to happen, and the two sides are working silently to
patch everything up, people were puzzled by the above press release that
announces a world championship supercross series, with 2 non-US rounds in
December and the rest the CCE schedule. What's going on? Is this
a bluff, or is the Jam deal still possible? Motonews doesn't know for
sure who has signed what, but informed opinion is Dorna and CCE did make a
deal to do SX in 2003, and this has to be worked out if the AMA and CCE
patch things up. This is partially why things are so quiet as the AMA
and CCE continue talking.

Huge turnout! 69,400! The
Atlanta crowd was larger than San Diego. Second largest SX crowd
ever. I guess not having MC on podium
until now hasn't hurt attendance.
RC led every lap of the 250 main, he is
smoking right now. Travis was running in
second even though he
was very sick all week and probably was pushing his luck. After 7 laps in
second place and in site of RC he got too sick to continue and pulled off. I
saw the look on his face before the main and he looked rough, but was going
for it anyway.

DV was second, started
third, and just didn't make time on RC. MC got a decent start and rode in
4th and 3rd, finishing on the podium for the first time this year. What a
relief for the whole McGrath Racing
team. Much talk was about
Ronron and DV getting mad in their heat
race. DV mentioned Ronron's riding was making him mad and he made a pass on
Ronron that knocked him off the track. Ronron was mad and had to pick
himself up. Just after Ronron ran into DV's bike, and before it was over DV
hit him a few times and DV's bike was knocked over.
DV was fined $2,000 for swinging at Ronron.
That wasn't the only fuss. Lusk
(who is back up to speed and won his heat race) got hit by
Ernie in the first lap of the main in a
turn and everyone said it was a takeout. Lusk was mad and shoved him. They
were 19th and 20th after that. Duke talked to him but didn't fine him. Still
he wasn't too happy. Tortelli finished a
respectable 4th after a dice with Ronron. Ronron 5th,
Heath Voss 6th.
Sheesh.
Kelly Smith got
another 125 class holeshot and led six laps. Horton
was second for two. Langston got knocked
around twice. Brown had a good lead but
Reed caught him and passed in a bowl
turn. Good racing. Reed won, Brown second, and
Boniface made podium again. Someone took
Budman out.
Bubba was there signing
autographs and surprised me when he said he reads Mototalk and likes the
site. Jeff
Gibson made both mains again! Saw Amsoil's new prospect
Ryan Mills. He may fill in for
Preston in outdoors, depending how
Preston feels I guess, but should do the last three nationals too.
Kenny Bartram missed making the 250 main by one spot in
the semi but got smoked in the LCQ and did some tricks.
Jason (JT$) Thomas made his first race this year, 13th in
250 main.
www.arenacross.com has results from the Sacramento AX.
Darcy Lange won both mains and the
DFC and Demuth was second in all three.
Tonight is Atlanta supercross, which is
the series halfway point and the second Vans Triple Crown race.
DV needs to win Atlanta and Vegas to
take home the $.5million.

Mike LaRocco's wrist surgery went quite well. (See
Dr Bodnar's report above). Dr
Bodnar was there with him too after the surgery. Here is what he wrote
us: "I was watching the surgery and the
wrist seemed quite stable from a ligamentous point of view and no surgery on
the ligaments was required. The arthroscopic part
of the surgery did show some cartilage injury
which cleaned up nicely. He will need approximately
3 months of casting/splinting before riding again. The wires holding
the bones in the wrist immobile will come out in six weeks."

Supercross wars over?
Could be any time now. The AMA and CCE have been talking to each other
but not to the media about the details-understandably. With the recent
changes of the AMA Pro Racing Board makeup, it's only a matter of time

Motoworld.com has reported
that more changes took place on the AMA Pro Racing Board of Directors that
started the Jam Supercross flap in November. A second member,
Rick Gray, has left, and
PJ Harvey has replaced
Mark Tuttle as chairman. Gray's
replacement is Kevin Schwantz, who just
was elected in the "Take back the AMA" campaign and started Feb 16th.
Reading between the lines in all this-it means dissention with the Jam deal
caused a reorganization at the top. The people who are coming in don't
want to see supercross split. The chances of these people now pushing
this Jam SX deal are just about zero. So where does this leave CEO
Hollingsworth? No one has
said anything yet, but Hollingsworth, who has strongly defended the Jam deal
and getting away from CCE in supercross, can't keep pushing to get away from
CCE in this environment. He will have to come up with a clever way to
change his mind and make it sound good, or leave also.
So what's up with
KW? DC
reports on Racerhead the he "will
spend this week at Jeff Stanton’s house
in Michigan trying to get his head back on right for racing. The whispers in
the pits are that Windham is going though a Jeff
Emig-like slump like the one that befell ‘Fro in 1998, the season
after winning both the 250 Supercross and 250cc National MX Championships."
More updates:
Justin Smith is improving rapidly, and
now eating real food and smiling. They hope he is well enough to
attend the Dallas SX and see everyone.
Still more:
JSR crashed out of Minneapolis at
practice but he will be OK. He is just bruised and got a pipe burn.

Wow, screwups, tempers, charges, and 5 out of 6 podium
spots go to internationals.

Any Americans racing tonight?
RC wins again, after a
weak start and an impressive charge. Plenty of screwups cost people that
were doing good. If the season weren't bizarre enough,
Tortelli got the holeshot and led 4 laps! Then
MC took over, but RC and
Ernesto zapped him. Then
Lusk (who won his heat race) had third
wired until he screwed up on the last lap, handing third to
DV, who had charged up from a crap start
(12th after lap one). Ramsey
was running in third, and got a grade 2 concussion and a separated
shoulder-bummer.
1) RC, 2) Ernie, 3) DV, 4) Ronron. RC is
now 23 points behind DV.

Travis and
LaRocco hit on lap 5, LaRocco was angry
and reportedly pushed Travis (that part I didn't see), then LaRocco stayed
off the track and got his broken wrist wrapped. Travis came back around and
went off the track again in the whoops, not far from where LaRocco's bike
was resting. LaRocco walked over to him and gave him some stern words-he was
pretty ticked off. Travis walked off and left early, which is not like him.
I am pretty sure he felt like crap about it.
Tyler Evans was back
and made the main. Jeff Gibson made both
mains.
Reed led every lap of
the 125 main, even though he didn't ride all week and couldn't walk
Wednesday due to a groin injury ay Elsinore Monday.
Grant was third the whole time but got by his teammate
Boniface with two laps to go.
1) Reed, 2) Langston, 3) Boniface, 4) Mike Brown (top 125
American!)
Budman was
roosted off the start or something. After 1 lap he was 19th-and finished
10th. Ward and
Kelly Smith had good rides.
Robbie Horton was
second to Reed in a heat race (impressive) and also impressive in that heat
was Jacob Martin (3rd) but he separated
a shoulder in the main.
JSR crashed out
of practice and probably just has a bruised shoulder.
On the SX wars, a lot of people wanted to know what went
down with the AMA folks in Indy, but know one who knew (if they did) was
talking. Overall people are pretty upbeat and expect an end to the SX wars
very very soon.

has a pretty good update on the status of the AMA
and CCE thingy. Both sides are talking, and as you know
Ulrich, Nash and
Schwantz get their seats on the AMA board
today. That means the separate
subcommittee they created to ratify a Jam deal will have a different
composition as of today.
The AMA side will surely hash this over at Indy tomorrow. CCE people
are pretty much busy here in Minne Apples. The
chances of getting a Jam deal approved over all the opposition it
faces now are very slim, unless they form a super secret subcommittee of the
subcommittee.....
Friday practice report:
Chad Reed has an
injured groin and didn't ride practice today. He will give it a go
today. KW
and Tortelli are back, and I hear
Tyler Evans is going to try riding too,
back on the Husky. There is still some
grumbling about the incident at Indy with Reed
and the wrist slap he got for doubling while Bryne
was on the ground. Probably what makes it worse is the comment from the AMA
that supposedly said "Well its his first win here so...." Rules are rules?
There was a section that was tough to clear
on a 250, and Travis reportedly hit it
really hard.

According to Italian
journalist Mario Marini, that trick fork
gadget on MC's, DV's and the YOT bikes is a few years old. "The
trick you mention has been invented by Italian team manager
Corrado Maddii
about five six or years ago and has been used
into the GPs for a while so far. That helps a lot to get the holeshot as the
bike doesn't perform any wheelies and right after the start the rider with
a simple touch of his hand can reset the bike perfect for the rest of the
race."

Amsoil/Factory Connection's
Michael Byrne had a bad crash in the 125
main at Indy, here is the status:
Partially collapsed lung, broken rib, broken ankle and broken collar bone.
They are hoping to release him Tuesday.
Dave Feeney from FC stayed with him.
Ernesto

is OK, just bummed.
 |
02/09/02: |

DV won a thrilling 250
main at Indy with a bold last lap pass on
RC in a bowl turn. Travis
was leading but missed the inside rut in a tight left turn giving RC a
chance to take the inside line. Travis spun back and blocked RC, and his
bike was sideways on the track. RC bumped him (no where to go) then Travis
just fell over, losing several places. The crowd booed like crazy every time
he went by, and the podium boo was louder than St Louis years ago when Lusk
bumped MC (1998 I think). The crowd was flat out wrong! RC got a bum rap and
I will prove it with 7 photos of the incident in the morning.

In the 125 class,
Chad Reed won!
Langston had the speed but was working
in about 4th when he looped at the end on the whoops and broke his clutch.
He couldn't get the bike in neutral and they dragged it off the track.
Brown was second. Reed rode a very smart
race, showing patience and lack of mistakes. Budman
was third!
There is good news to report on
the supercross wars. Here is a bold but accurate prediction on what is about
to happen:
The AMA and CCE are going to find a way to stick together,
status quo for 2003. The resignation of Mark Tuttle
is part of a chain of events internally at the AMA
and the unpopular Jam deal will fall apart. It will not make it out of the
AMA due to dissention. Two people will probably leave the AMA over this,
Hollingsworth and
Agajanian (sp?). That's too bad but they tried to engineer a
way to dump CCE for the wrong reasons, and the industry refuses to accept
that. CCE will go along and work with them
to find a way to make stopping this madness look nice when they reveal the
above. Bottom line: People don't want to see the AMA get damaged in all
this, and someday it will seem like a bad dream. More on this next week.

Friday at Indy
was a good practice day on tacky rut-forming dirt.
Ramsey looked at home on his CRF450R. He should have a good
weekend. The usual fast people were usually
fast, no surprises. MC looks OK. The 125
class will be on fire! Langston,
Brown and Reed stood out.
Brown endoed hard into a turn right in front of me and got up slow, but he's
OK. Mike Craig
hurt his foot again and didn't show up.

Reynard and
Johnny Marley are here on Hondas.
It was good to see
Antunez (and his buddy Tomac),
Ward, Dowd, Jesseman, Kevin Crine, Damien Plotts,
Frenette, Currie, Keith Johnson (east), and plenty more.
Jeff Gibson is here on a trick looking

cutting it close with Duke Finch in a
heated arguement about aggressive riding last weekend. Ronron got really mad
and he got close to getting tossed out! DV,
MC and YOT Yamahas have a trick gadget on the right fork leg at
the fork seal area. I heard its a clip to hold the fork compressed a little
on a start.

Moto XXX mechanics, Matthes is on left.
New weekly stop' Make sure you
check out "Behind the Board" each week on Nick
Wey's web site, www.nickwey.com.
It's by him mechanic Steve Matthes.
The good news on
Justin Smith is that he is awake and recovering.
Fortunately we didn't loose him. The bad news is that it is very
unlikely he will ride again. Injuries like his are severe, and Dr's
won't be too encouraging about what movements he will gain back. Cross
your fingers and hope for the best.

Anaheim 3 post race press conference.
Attendance from the press was great. These get the interviews done all
at once. Before this the pits after the races were busy with
journalists with recorders scrambling in and out of the team trucks while
everyone is trying to pack and sign autographs.

Photohound Ryan Mahoney of
www.photocross.net had this to
report from Friday at Anaheim: Speed
Demons: Travis Pastrana,
Jamie Little and Stephane Roncada
took a break from the Supercross action today to play.
Travis was seen going flat out in his new Shifter Kart the open
parking lot of Edison International Field. The three were taking turns
driving; it looked like Jamie was laying down some faster times then Ron Ron
– just kidding. I wonder if Travis is working on his license for Formula 1?
It would be nice to have an American in that international field.

If you heard the rumor
Larry Ward would be riding the east 125 supercross for Moto XXX,
you heard right! He is riding the series starting at Indy. The team
will be at Anaheim this weekend with a cool new rig too.

All the way from Australia, our own
Mototalker Motodude sends this pic of
Motodude Jr (Mark Brenchley) learning to ride his new XR80.
