NEWS:
Not a rumor: Fro broke both forearms at Roncada's while practicing, and will be getting surgery to put pins in this morning. Launi is taking care of him right now. He was pumped for Supercross next week, and is understandably very disappointed. Dang! Remember him at your New Years party tonight. Let's hope the best for a speedy recovery. Stefy Bau, wonder woman, will go for about three rounds of the EA Sports Supercross with the support of Splitfire, Thor and Scott. Andrew from Works Connection reports Lamson is off to Italy to ride for Freetime Yamaha in the 250 GPs. Wish him luck! Anyone who saw Lami when he was tearing up the 125 nationals here will recall how impressive many of his runaway motos were. Fro's 2000 Team is called Strategic Three Sports, according to team co-conspirator Tim Dixon, a Motonews 2 regular. Fro's teammate will be Brian Mcgavran, 125 West. Speaking of fro's, here's a real one. Check it out! The Y2K season is fast approaching! Jan 8th is EA Sports Supercross #1! Next week, get ready for photos from the track building, press day, preview stuff, and the second annual Crossover Event. PACESupercross.com will be the place to hang out on Saturday night. They are gearing up for live uploads right from transponders, The detail available in real time over the web will take a big step up from waiting for a typed in report to upload. Also watch for photos uploaded on-site. Things have been quiet on the live audio this time, but I guess it's old news Motoworld.net won't be doing it this time. The e-mag 2000 will be cooling it untill after the event, but you will soon find the photo magazine first round of photos and news.
Thanks to the Mototalkers who pitched in with corrections for the Teams 2000 rider list. There are still some to fill in. If anyone you know is missing or in the wrong place, please let me know. Hoppen sent this photo of Donovan Mitchell from the US Open. At last there is some encouraging news about him regaining feeling in one arm and his chest. (Note to FD from Sharon Richards, pasted on Mtalk.) Snagged from a movie review: ''Man on the Moon'' presents Kaufman's life as a series of madly intricate
reality- "I bet this would work on the web too" -- TFS The Artist formerly known as Bauer sends in a seventh Shameless, which is pretty damn good. I admit it.
According to the local buzz in Alabama, a killer new track built by Mart Barnett called Monster Mountain in Tallassee (NE of Montgomery) is good enough to inspire even retired heros from the to bust out the cash for a bike again and roost! The track is managed on-site by Johnny Borders, a well-known pro from the area. The e-mag digicam is on the way there today to check it out. An expert on snagging bar dragging photos has put together a way cool summary on a web page. Check this one by Alex Wagner! The link to Hoppen photos from the Chaparral Supercross at Glen Helen is fixed. Since I was numbering them I see the clever folks on Mototalk found the photos anyway. Schutte continues to follow the Seth drama on Mototalk... Check out Four Leaf Entertainment (sic) for a video when they are ready. Hoppen photos from the Chaparral Supercross at Glen Helen are in..
Schutte: "Broken skull (two places), crushed orbital socket and torn eye cartilage. One may assume then that Enslow will need some major facial reconstructive surgery in the weeks and possibly months to come."
Jim Carrey is our own hero Andy Kaufman in the new movie "Man in the Moon." Andy's warped sense of humor was so powerful (and controversial) he can still stir people up 15 or so years after his death. Really, even on the web. I'm not making this up! Doh! Steve G sends digiphotos from Glen Helen! No one else has the super-secret photo of MC and his gear for next year. Check it out! Speedvision has a cool story about Jeff Ward and his success in IRL car racing, and they talk more about his history in MX.
Don't miss all the major scoopage that just went up on Racer X's site. DC's Racerhead has a lot of new info on next year's Supercross, and Eric Johnson has a full story on the really significant new deal between Kawasaki and Chevy Trucks, the new title sponsor of the AMA outdoor National Championships. So, video games and truck companies are leading the outside support for the world's coolest sport! What's going to happen when RC's nails a SX win? Podium speech: "I really enjoyed winning this EA Sports Supercross presented by Toyota Trucks, and I would like to thank my Chevy Trucks Kawasaki team and THQ video games for all their support, and...." Hey it happens, Mazda-sponsored MC wins a Toyota truck for taking the SX title all the time. Everyone is polite and smiles when he gets the key. Transponders have landed! At last an American race will have transponders to score lap times and monitor progress. The EA Sports Supercross will have the technology ready for Jan 8th, according to a press release on PACESupercross.com. This is a significant upgrade that will also change everything for the live webcast. Now you will be able to monitor everyone's laps at home live, and not have to rely on what a live text laptop slave is typing. This will be a big boost to web race-watching, since the laptop folks in press can focus more on keeping up with the action and less on typing who is where all the time. It's also good for friends and parents at home who sometimes get frustrated when their race hero isn't it the thick of the action and doesn't get mentioned until later. At least they will know where everyone is. Of course it can also start worries, because you will be able to see DNF's in real time too. If Jr dropps off the lap times halfway through a race, the folks at home at least need to know it wasn't a trip to the Dr. Laptop folks in press will need to remember that.
Here's a link to some of the AMA's news from Vegas. Fonseca got MX Rookie of the year. Chad Watts (RC's mech) got MX Tuner of the Year. More new stuff: -Sondra is reporting Mattel Toys action figures with the top ten riders. I wonder if the grownups will scoop them up before the kids get a chance to collect them. -Mototalk2 news on Donovan Mitchell is optimistic, but unfortunately no recovery from paralysis yet. Sharon Richards from AXO is keeping him company, and plenty others no doubt. Donovan Mitchell Donations can be mailed to - Motonews regular has cameras for sale: O060 1015, OLYMPUS D620L DIGITAL CAMERA 3X ZOOM 8MB $895.00, 214 in stock Note: Almost all the digital stuff from 1999 e-mag was done with an Olympus 620. Last weekend the AMA's Awards banquet was held in Vegas, and plenty of other things were certainly talked about and planned. This is a good time to watch for news on what is happening next year, such as Chevy Trucks sponsoring outdoor MX, stuff like that. Watch for info on the AMA's site, or check out what DC has for us on friday at Racer X. MC won the Supercross in Osaka this weekend. Button was second. A classic returns.. The coolest set of old racing photos on the web is just about all rounded up after a server change that left some missing. Bauer's Shameless is worth another look for sure!!! This weekend the whole race gang will be at Glen Helen for the Chaparral SX warmup. It's a don't-miss event! So many riders and teams will be there with next year's stuff it's almost like a preview to Press Day for Anaheim Round 1 Jan 8th. There haven't been any FIM Supercross events in Osaka since winter 1997. Last weekend's was not an FIM event either. The only US media at the last Osaka race was - Motonews! We didn't even call it e-mag back then, that didn't start till Jan 98. Here's an exclusive look back two years ago, when Ward first rode his new Suzuki, Ezra first rode his Honda, and MC was still pretty new to the YZ.
EA Sports Supercross is just around the corner! New for 2000: -Announcer Jamie Little, nice! -EA Sports, title sponsor, the "If it's in the game, it's in the game" folks get into the game for real. -Improved scoring technology (can we talk about that yet?) -PR Manager, Ryan Marshall, watch for his stuff on PACESupercross.com. -This is just a guess, but watch for more tie-ins with Freestyle. FMX is a hit for sure. -Speedvision. New TV folks, but same program. Still in: -Crossover Event, Extreme Athletes to try out the track on Friday for the second time. Our own favorite Queenie Sondra is working on the roster and she says its killer! -Heather! -Great racing! The vet riders are one year smarter, and just as fast. MC at 28 hasn't slowed down. -Art, David Bailey, and DC. -Emig. Watch for a comeback from the only guy to win a 250 title besides MC since 1993! Not Starting in January: -Chiodi, scary crash, more on MXLarge. -Reynard, recovering from that nasty shoulder injury at US Open.
Jeff Emig should be getting out of his plastic boot thingy they put on after his surgery today. Assuming all is well he can start getting ready for Supercross in January. The e-mag 2000 has a link to about 90 Rockford Arenacross photos from this weekend. This is a sneak peek at a photo media release that goes out to web sites and mags.
Since we were on the topic of bar-dragging on Mototalk, I decided to post this one. It's a near-drag (Ryno at he USGP).
The racing will cool it for the rest of the year, but there is plenty still coming in for you to see, so stick around and check in once a day! When you do your Christmas cards, you can think of these injured riders too who would like to hear from you: Robbie Reynard Thanks go out to Michelle for making this list. If you have more please send. Here's the TV schedule for PACE FMX series on ESPN/ESPN2. Check www.pacefmx.com for more info.
Denny Stephenson (250) and Nick Wey (125) split the wins at Saturday's Arenacross in Rockford. Both turned holeshots into wins, but the 250 main was a start to finish thriller! The 250 race quickly spread out, and in no time Snoop and Wey were in lapped traffic. Snoop pulled off the most incredible use of lapped riders I have ever seen! It seemed at almost every turn Snoop had one extra rider to pass (sometimes two), and he set up so he could get away and leave Wey with a mess. Wey was ripping fast, but the traffic was tough. Stevey d mentioned afterwards he noticed it too and thought Snoop's specific AX experience showed because he seemed to anticipate everything going on around him. Snoop afterwards said nice things about his teammate and defending champ Budman, and said the racing was real and he wants this title too.
Natedog Ramsey and Tracy McGrath in Paris on Bercy weekend.
Unfortunately we still don't have any good news about Donovan Mitchell yet, but the whole web is pulling for him. DC's Racerhead this week is about this years injuries. Even one is too many, but this year seemed to be particularly upsetting. Too much bad news. Our favorite pre-mediahound Oggi got a cover story on Motoworld.net! Good work Oggi. Oggi joins the growing list of folks who are getting into the news via Motonews/Mototalk. Others just this year were stevey d, now a regular in Racer X mag, Don Graber, (92CR) TOC photo of Albee in MXRacer (holding up #1 plate), photos in Practice Track mag, and articles appeared on MXLarge.com, Michelle Griffith, seen on Racer X and PACESupercross.com, Dominique Sourie (French TFS), who is dragging France into web race coverage whether it is ready or not, and I am sure I forgot some. We would of course like to thank Mr "Cover Boy" 1978 Bauer for making it all possible (haha).
Check out this photo of Fro Hutch snagged from a magazine and posted on Mototalk. It's from Australia in 1992, and yes, Motodude was there shooting photos too. Talk about it on Mototalk.. Also on Mototalk, much buzz about the new SX/MX video games and the systems. Which is your favorite and why? The folks who make them are reading... Hey, Hutch has been busy putting together our own Motonews Fantasy Season! He's talking real green cash for winners too, so watch for more details. Bauer reports Fro had ankle surgery, but will be recovered by the start of the EA Sports Supercross series opener, Jan 8. PACE will be kicking off the season with it's second Crossover Event, Jan 7th, where they invite all-stars from a variety of extreme sports to try out the Anaheim track a day before the pros go at it. Here's an advance podium quote from the top three: "Damn! It's a lot harder than it looks!" -Anyone in the Crossover Event. NEW! We dig back to August and get some outtakes from the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Championship finals!
(Special thanks to Steve G for the cool new graphics!)
