RC looked happy to be on a 125 again at Steel City.  He was plenty fast too. A major showdown will happen tomorrow.

Some Steel City pit buzz, Moto XXX talking to Kelly Smith (YZ250F), they want 4 riders next year.  MC will be racing two more Supercross seasons, and very likely a new title sponsor.

OK, no more smack talking about Clear Channel people not being motoheads.   Todd Jendro, Director of Supercross, rode the industry race and amateur day at Steel City.  He was riding a borrowed Motoworld YZ250F.

Engine Ice won an incredible 14 titles at Loretta's, and 9 at Ponca City, read about it here.  Also WMR Competition Performance won its first title at Loretta's, heres the press release.

Sponsorhouse.com has a new way for riders and sponsors to hook up when planning for next season, check out this press release.

Josh Demuth is in for Steel City on a YZ250F.

Motoworld confirmed it's 2002 team in this press release.

Tuf Racing Honda's Arenacross team will be Jiri Dostal, Chad Johnson and Jeff Willoh.

Here's a page covering the new Saddleback Park facility.

Schutte did a great interview with Travis Pastrana on www.racerxill.com, check out what he says about RC in the 125 class this weekend.  Also he said he's in for the US Open.

Practice Track, the worst magazine there is, and a must-read, also has a bad web site with a weekly radio show.  It's hard to believe these guys can keep a computer running, but go to www.practicetrack.net and slap the Dead Motocrosser's Society.

The Millville People photos are up!

Done Deal. On Monday both RC and Lusk can officially be Honda and Kawasaki guys, respectively.  In the months since the RC to Honda deal was decided, before SX was over, both Honda and Kawasaki cooperated behind the scenes to make a smooth transition. RC isn't talking about Honda still and Honda did nothing to steal Kawasaki's thunder during the outdoor season. Next week the two can ride their new bikes officially, do photos, get ready for MXdNs, dealer shows, or whatever.

Its pretty cool two competitors both saw it in their best interest to not bust each others balls over this.  Stay tuned Monday for whatever official stuff we can scrape up.

no35.jpg (25244 bytes)

When teams like McGrath Racing and ez wider ask Yamaha for factory 125 support, the answer is no, because Yamaha's factory effort is Yamaha of Troy.  MC can get a factory 250 for himself and whomever they hire to ride 250 class in the outdoors, but not a 125.

Competition with copycats in China and slow sales have prompted an alliance between Kawasaki and Suzuki on some bike models, here's some link to read...

Article about the Kawasaki/Suzuki alliance

Robbie Reynard checked out a Cannondale recently.  Racer X reports Ty Wallace is riding one at Steel City. It is possible Reynard will ride the US Open 4-stroke class.

There are more Camp Loretta's photos on Boyesen's web site, http://www.boyesen.com/whatsnew/camplorettas2001.html

Today media are going to check out the new racing facility near the old Saddleback Park.

In case no one mentioned it yet, Kevin Windham will race with the 500s at the MXdN next month.

The emag has a lot of new photos, and a big update to the People section for Binghamton.

Congrats go out to expecting parents Davey and Shannon Coombs!   I hope that's not a secret.

RC will be practicing this week on Bentley's KX125.  Pro Circuit KX125's have Showa suspension, but RC has the techs in California digging up his old Kayaba stuff and settings.  He wants things set up just like they were at Steel City in 1999.

Next year's THQ MX game for the Playstation 2 with have a realistic LaRocco's leap!  If you have ever had the urge to pin the throttle on a 250 and sail over the sickest jump in the sport, this will be your chance, and you don't have to see a doctor afterwards if you do it on the playstation.

engine.gif (387 bytes) 08/26/01:   Motocross!    167

Binghamton's 125 and 250 articles are up in the Racing section.

Binghamton:  RC 1-1, Langston 1-1. RC won his title and confirmed on the podium that he is riding a 125 next weekend. Tortelli had a 2nd in one moto and a big getoff on a fast downhill and a concussion. He got right back up but was sent to a hospital for check up. Its not a sure thing he will ride Steel City after that. Windham was second and just couldn't stay with RC. Ferry third.

Jesseman had a hard getoff too and also had a concussion.

Langston got around Brown both motos and went 1-1. He's 9 points ahead so the title is his to lose. Amazing after Southwick.

People who saw the first moto takeout said it was rough, but Brown wasn't complaining really, but he did skip the podium interview. Duke Finch took Langston and Brown into his motor home before the second moto and told them to ride clean and people are watching. That almost never happens.

Ward took third in points with a third for the day. He is talking about the same deal for next year, outdoor only, YZ250F and Yoshimura motors and goodies.

When RC's mechanic Chad Watts told DC and Motoworld last weekend about an idea to have RC ride a 125 at Steel City, no one could believe what they just heard.  He's tied with Mark Barnett for career 125 National wins, and Steel City will be his last race on a Kawasaki.  It would be fun to clinch the 250 title at Binghamton, break the tie, and have a fun weekend at Steel City on a 125.  It's still a maybe, but at Binghamton RC confirmed that it is very likely, assuming all goes well this weekend. He isn't taking anything for granted though, and KW looked very strong in practice.

Who's In/Who's Out for Binghamton:

In:  Doug Henry
In:  Andrew Short
In:  Josh Woods
In:  Jim Neese on a KTM
In:  Lance Smail

Out:  Travis Pastrana, saving his noodle for the future, take the poll!
Out:  Tallon Vohland, shoulder hurting from last weekend.
Out:  Shae Bentley, ankle surgery after Millville.

The rider turnout for both classes at Binghamton is huge.

Elin Mann won the women's national at Binghamton.  Sara Whitmore was second and Tania Satchwell third.  Stefy Bau crashed out of the top three.

KTM's new team manager Ron Heben is starting next week.  He left Kawasaki where he ran the Team Green program.

engine.gif (387 bytes) 08/25/01:   Motocross!    167

GP contender Paul Cooper is out with a knee injury.  He will need ACL reconstruction.

Today is Round 5 of the 2001 Bel Ray/WML Outdoor Motocross Championships at Binghamton.  The title chase is close!  Tania Satchwell leads with Stefy Bau 4 points behind, and Sheena Patterson is just 6 points behind Bau.  The final round will be at Steel City.  Defending WML champion Jessica Patterson didn't make any of the WML races because of her broken leg, but when she returned to racing at Loretta's she broke it again while leading the second moto.  Major bummer.  She's out.

Swedish rider Elin Mann is getting full-on factory Huqvarna support for the last two rounds of the WML series.  She raced the first two rounds in California before going back home.

Rumors are flying about Mike Craig putting together a team to race Hondas next year, and he wants to include Brandes and Reynard.   So far its too early. Reynard has some other options to consider, and he wants to test a Cannondale.

Racer X reports Michael Byrne is in-country, and we should see him at one or both of the next nationals on a Factory Connection Honda.  Also on the FC Honda list, Ryan Mills, one of Honda's entries in the Engine Ice 125cc Invitational at the US Open.

Freestlyer Jeremy Carter broke both his legs while practicing for the X Games.

Tomorrow night Frozen Ocean is holding a race in Auburn, NY,  about 45 from Binghamton. Langston, Sellards, Sheak and more riders should be there. On Thursday they are having a Pro/industry practice.  Their site is www.frozen-ocean.com.

RC looks good for his second 250 outdoor title Sunday at Binghamton.  Racer X says Doug Henry will be back but riding the 125 class this time. The last time we saw Henry was at Southwick.

RC: 1-1 at Millville.

0grant200.jpg (31972 bytes)

Grant:  1-1 at Millville.

At Millville, Travis Pastrana pulled out of the first moto while running third.   After the moto he said he realized he would not be able to compete for the championship with all the time off between races.  He was taking it easy due to concussions.  He said he would stop riding long enough to recover, per Dr's advice.  He won't finish the X Games, and Mike Brown will replace him on Team USA at the MXdN.

Major bummer:  At Millville, Shae Bentley suffered a nasty broken ankle that came through the skin.  He is in surgery tonight. More details from Dr Steve Augustine will be part of this week's 125 Racing report.

James Dobb and Mickael Pichon won thier titles this weekend at the German GP. Read all about it here.

O'Neal is going to have a special riding gear edition based on a design just for Stephane Roncada.

After a 2 week break, the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships resumes, with round 10 at Millville.  RC is cruising way out front in points, but the 125 race is wide open.  Brown leads, Langston is right behind him, and Pastrana can still take it if he stays in one piece.   Pastrana seemed to have all his marbles at Loretta's last week, but he wasn't racing nationals either.

When MX people decide to get behind something-look out, especially in the era of the 'Net. It's only been a few days since we started kicking around the idea of sponsoring Florida's Cole Boutwell to the US Open, and whole thing just keeps gaining momentum every day.   Tucker-Rocky's (Answer racing)  Shari Meyers has been working the industry over for goodies for young Cole and his sister. Before its over this guy will be the most factory YZ80 rider you can find. Meyers has found him tires, helmets, gear, backpacks, chains, oil, clothes, more clothes and more.  You can send her a thank you at:  SMeyers@tuckerrocky.com. Motonews.com is raising travel cash.  Also, Cole with have a celebrity mechanic!   When he gets to the Vegas, his wrench will already have a US Open win to his credit, because it Fro's mechanic from 1999, Tim Dixon.

Major bummer dept:  Defending women's WML and Loretta's champion Jessica Patterson broke her leg while winning the second moto at Loretta's after an intense battle with Stefy Bau.  She had just went through a long recovery, and the word at the track was pins in her leg were working loose, and broke again.  Get well soon!

Our esteemed Daily News sponsor Engine Ice was a big winner at Loretta's.  About half the champions were using the cool blue stuff from www.cyclelogic.cc

Brandon Jesseman won't be on Motoworld Suzuki afterall.  He is now going to be on Factory Suzuki's 125 team, leaving Buckelew to either go to MW (not sure) or a different team.

The project to get Cole Boutwell to the US Open is picking up steam.  Motonews is getting plenty of emails offering cash support to get the Florida mini rider to Vegas this October.  Brad is putting together a web site you can use to make a contribution.  If you don't want to use the site, their address will be on it too.

0oopskb.jpg (39790 bytes)

Oops!  OK this was supposed to be a photo of CTi knee braces from the Loretta's fashion show.  Bad camera aim huh?

The folks over at Racer X are piling on the news on www.racerxill.com. They have Casey Johnson on Plano Honda for 2002, LaRocco on the Honda 4 stroke for the last three nationals.  DV on Oxbow gear in 2002, with a trainer, and Travis "in" for the X-Games.

The LaRocco thing makes sense, since earlier this year Honda said their goal was to have the bike in every national this year.  The DV to Oxbow was a secret for a while, but a couple of weeks ago a French mag released the story before the deal was done.

While shooting at Loretta's Motonews bumped into Progressive Motorcycle Safety, which markets neck support systems for racing. Check out their web site at www.promotorcyclesafety.com.

"Hey nice web site, I have something for you," was the voice from this guy in vendor row at Washougal.  He handed over a couple of large T-shirts, and said thanks for the web site.

Isn't that cool?

So he put the T-shirts in the TFS gadget bag, and I had to go back to shooting the races.

0stefyhappy.jpg (32669 bytes)

Cool quote from "Wonder Woman" Stefy Bau after winning at Loretta's: "I'm so happy that I can barely stand myself!!!!!!"

Fron Ryan Mahoney, who did pics at round one of the Triple Crown of FMX last weekend:  "Las Vegas and the Tom Mack Arena played host to the Vans Triple Crown of Freestyle Motocross this past weekend and many of the best riders in the sport came to show their goods. Mike Metzger made a showing and was treat to see ride. His wide open approach and riding skills are a sight to see.

Friday's Competition was won by Clifford Adoptante. Clifford had an incredibly smooth run capping it off with a sterilizer he rode out and back into the arena much to the screaming fans delight. Saturday's event was won by new kid on the block Nate Adams. 17 year old Nate was Busting Huge Tsunami's Look-Backs and Double Grabs that were down right "SICK".

As normal the level of difficulty on the new tricks has risen and the sport of Freestyle Motocross is evolving at an incredible rate."

Cole Boutwell-going to Vegas?

If you have been reading Mototalk you know Florida's Cole Boutwell made the US Open 80 class.  He recently had a tragedy in the family and his mom Barbara said they weren't sure if they could swing the trip.  No Problemo!

Motonews has already found $800 for them on the first day.  An industry person has put up $250, and Bauer and I will match it, plus Shyla is in. We just need a few more, and we have some other ideas cooking too.  Also, I don't think they know about it yet!

If you want in on a cool project to fix up Cole in Vegas, send email to sbroon@aol.com.

Day one of racing at Lorettas went well.  It was a little hot but the track was awesome and the racing good.

Bubba! Bubba ruled.  He smoked the 125 Mod 12-15 in the morning and the 125 A in the afternoon, just before the racing ended and everyone went to the Pavilion for the fun Gatorade basketball game, featuring the green Gatorade team vs the grape colored gatorade team.  The team managers were RC and Travis Pastrana, with one foot in a brace.  The event was way cool.   Watch the Loretta's results site for photo by tomorrow, and maybe even a game report by sports writer Pat Schutte.

There were plenty of moto winners today besides Bubba, even though he was the most impressive.  The Loretta's results site has photo pages from 6 different motos, and complete results.

Ryan Hughes got checked out by a Dr. and is OK to ride, but he will sit out one month, and the Motocross des Nations.   That means Team USA needs a replacement.  So far it is unconfirmed, but the replacement looks like it will be Tim Ferry.

Here are some travel tips from Meyer (snagged off Mototalk): You can take the train to Namur from Brussels, check out MXlarge they have the Namur web site on their site. Beer is cold, the track is terrible for watching, you see nearly nothing, but the atmosphere more than makes up for the lack of track time. Saturday is from qualification races and practise and is also worth seeing. Hope this helps. For Hotels check out Namur.com, and under hotels.

Stefy Bau (L) is on her way to Lorettas's on her own. She and her sponsor Eric Osner (R) of Crossroads Powersports parted ways this week.  Stefy may be pitted with the Pilot Travel Center team folks.  Osner is one his way to Lorettas with Jeff Northrup.

Former Supercross champion Ricky Johnson is in Chicago with a Petty driving experience thing. One of his goals this weekend is to get Clear Channel Supercross honchos Roy Jansen and Charlie Mancuso in a race car.

In case you missed it, Ray put Round 6 of the Canadian Nationals on the emag.

Also in case you haven't visited, check out www.mototrixx.com.

Everyone has been talking about Travis Pastrana's concussions this year, but he's not the only one in the same situation.  Today Ryan Hughes hears from his Dr. about an MRI he had done after that practice crash that took him out of Washougal.

There will be a CHAT on August 7th at 8:00pm CST in the Chat Room at the Jeff Emig Fan Club web page.  Hope you can join in!!!  Let's talk about what you think of Emig riding Washougal. http://www.noshy1.com/

Check out Steve Densmore's interview of Freestyler Dustin Miller.

More photos are up in the People section.  The emag is way behind!   People photos from Troy are still going up, check it out.

The wild and crazy three-night Bercy Supercross will be Nov 9-11 this year.   MC has an open deal to race each year until he retires.  The other fast US guy in the 250 class should be Travis Pastrana.

Vuillemin won't be at the US Open in Oct.  He will be in France with his girlfriend Erica from Sept 21/Oct 21.

Tom Webb, who recently left FMF to do something different, will be working at Dirt Bike magazine.

Travis in a cool new No Fear chest protector.

Everyone is talking about defending 125 champion's health these days, and they should be considering those concussions and the time Travis spent on the ground last weekend at Washougal.

Should he stop racing now and who should decide?  Should his parents step in?  This has triggered much talk about does SX/MX need an in-house medical authority.

You can find out what Travis's dad Robert Pastrana is thinking over at www.racerxill.com.  There is plenty to read on Mototalk also.
