Salt Lake City got a new show to look forward to, assuming the series makes a regular stop.  The weekend was a blast.  The SLC crowd was loud and enthusiastic, and the SFX folks seemed to be really upbeat about it. It was just that kind of weekend.  Everyone was impressed with Rice-Eccles stadium too.

RC is just one win away from equalling MC's incredible 13 straight wins. RC won a thrilling battle at Salt Lake City.  Check your TV schedule for when it will be on ABC.

RC also sealed a deal with Fox for 4 more years.  Rumors are abundant about a possible move to Honda for 2002, but its too early.  He may let us know in a few weeks what is up- maybe.

15mcrc.jpg (26553 bytes)

Don't even think about MC bailing out after this season. He is taking the RC thing pretty well overall, even though it was hard for him to get used to.  He will be back for more in 2002, and he will be doing the usual fall/winter "spending money" trips overseas.

Bikes Running Engine Ice Finish Top Five at 2nd All Japan National

On Sunday, April 22, the 2nd All Japan National was run and in the 125cc International Pro class, Kaga Shinichi, ranked 4th in the IA 125cc class, finished fifth in heat one, and third in heat two. He rides a 2001 Suzuki RM 125 for Team SRF (Suzuki Riding Forum) Takahashi Racing. The team put Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant in his bike before the races and after the moto he said he could tell the difference and that power stayed steady throughout the entire 30 minute plus one moto.

In the Women's class, last years champion Saya Suzuki finished second on a Suzuki RM 80 for Team SRF/WIN/Dirt Sports Magazine. She had a lot of wheel spin on the start and was in 10th place after the first turn. She worked her way up through the pack and finished second in the 10 minute plus one lap moto. Saya also had Engine Ice in her bike and was pleased with its performance.

Here is some quick Friday gossip for the Salt Lake City Supercross:

Ernesto Fonseca is looking good for his second Supercross title.  The first was 1999 in the east when he almost won every race.  The media in Costa Rica are really looking forward to tomorrow.   Ernie is a national hero there.

IN:  David Vuillemin, feels good and wants to race!

OUT:  Travis Pastrana, not racing either class.  His mechanic Lee isn't here.  (125s only in Vegas)
OUT:  Danny Smith, Casey Lytle, Shae Bentley.

Scott Sheak is ready to ride the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships series and is looking for a ride.

Michael Byrne is going back to Australia after the Vegas Supercross.  He can make more money there and get ready to return in 2002.

Friday practice didn't happen.  The track wasn't ready because they didn't get access to it fast enough this week.

THE NEW TE 400 ELECTRIC START: THE LATEST ARRIVAL IN THE HUSQVARNA 4 STROKES FAMILY

For Husqvarna which is about to release  a new dynasty of 4-stroke bikes into the market of all-terrain motorcycles,  the year 2001 is definitely an important one.
After the TE 250 that was introduced  at the last 6  Days of Enduro and has been Cyril Esquirol's motorcycle since the beginning of the year in the  world championship - allowing him to score excellent results - Husqvarna has now also disclosed the new TE 400 that has taken Stefan Merriman to victory in the second race of the Italian championship of enduro.
The tenets underlying the conception of this motorcycle are the ones of the 250:great  compactness, the same structural philosophy as for the two-stroke range, a small engine and of course an electric start. ………………..

RC makes History.

That's it.

Ricky Carmichael is the new EA Sports Supercross champion.

No one has been able to stay with MC in an all-out battle for a title-until this year.  RC won Dallas after a thrilling duel with Lusk that lasted about 5 laps, and left MC in a very distant third.

Dallas was RC's 11th win in a row, for a total of 12 wins in 14 races.  RC said he hasn't been riding over his head to win.

MC said he can't complain, he likes his job.

Articles about both classes are up on the emag 2001.

A trophy hunnie at the Australian GP last weekend tried on a Motonews.com hat for Motodude.

At least for now you can scratch Larry Ward off the YZ250F list, at least not with the Pro Action shop in Tennessee he was going to ride the nationals for.  The deal didn't happen.  Anyone else?

Ryan Hughes was awesome at the four stroke nationals race at Glen Helen today, winning both motos by wide margins in the US race debut of that Honda 450 4-stroke.  So far Ryno is the only Honda guy confirmed to race it in the nationals, but Honda wants it to be in every race so if something should happen to him another Honda guy might race it.  All have tried it and say good things about it, including LaRocco.   There are a total of 5 of them in the states, and at least one or two with some serious track time.  This number doesn't include the secret stash in Georgia that has been there since last year or whatever...

Casey Johnson is talking to KTM about riding the nationals for them on a 125.  KTM really wanted him before this season but he wanted a 250 ride so he went with Fro's team, which is now dissolved.

Tonight's EA Sports Supercross in Dallas will should be a big night.  RC is getting pretty close to a title, and Fonseca is too in 125s.  It could be a double title night.

Nutec racing fuels has an impressive record in road racing.  They want to expand into Motocross, here's the press release.

GP contender Josh Coppins has a web site.  It's www.joshcoppins.com.

Stefy Bau has a new engine builder:  She writes "I’m pleased to announce that since the 12th day of April 2001,  Mike Rossini of RRP is the engine builder sponsor. RRP will be in charge of all engine works and suspension for the entire season. I’ve already been testing with Mike and I have to say that I’m really impressed."

Here's the latest on Buddy Duffy from his mom Joan:

Just found out Buddy will undergo two surgical procedures on Monday 4-23, one on
his right eye and the other on an open contusion on the back right side of his head, they will do both at once so they do not have to put him under twice.  I know everyone is keeping him in their prayers, but a few extra ones on Monday will be appreciated.  I know the Lord is listening to all the prayers and staying constantly at Buddy's side.

He has lost a little more weight - he is at 138 lbs now, he was 176 before his injury, on his 6'3" frame it makes him look frail but he is very strong and working hard every day.  God Bless everyone and keep those e-mails and prayers coming, he is amazed everyday when we read them to him, he always asks us "why do so many people care about me? - that's really great.!"   We tell him its because he is a man with no enemies only very good friends and caring acquaintances, and even those who have never met him feel his bond with the Lord.

God Bless and we will update everyone on Tues 4-24-01

While Thor/HJC Helmets/Metzger Motorsports rider Dustin Miller was on the phone pledging money to support the Air Fence fundraising campaign initiated by Roadracing World/Team Hammer owner John Ulrich, Michaels Reno Suzuki was sending him a contract for bike sponsorship.

Michaels Suzuki, based in Reno, NV will sponsor Miller through the remainder of the 2001 season. As quick has he received the contract, two 2001 Suzuki RM250's and one RM125 arrived at his house. Dustin is making the switch from a Honda CR250 and is thrilled with his newest sponsors support of his freestyle motocross campaign to win the IFMA championship.

Miller would like to thank all of his sponsors: Thor, HJC Helmets, Metzger Motorsports, Scott USA, RK/Excel, FMF, Factory 909, TAG Metals, Sunstar, Alpinestar, Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant, FMF, Fastway Footpegs, Works Connection, UNI Filter, Michael Designs.

Who's in and who's out for Dallas:

IN:  Travis Pastrana in 250 class.
IN:  Michael Byrne, Emig's money, Kawasaki's Kawasaki, St Louis Powersports pits.
IN:  Nick Wey, looked real good on the YZ 250.
IN:  Mike Craig, saw him in pits anyway.

OUT:  Pingree, ribs.
OUT:  Lytle, hurt ankle again.
OUT:  Bentley, dislocated shoulder and broke collarbone.
OUT:  Nathan Ramsey, didn't get to ride the YZ426 enough to get ready.
OUT:  Casey Johnson, the split with Emig wasn't real happy, he declined the same ride Byrne has.
OUT:  Danny Smith, still healing navicular bone (wrist).

More: didn't see Fro yet, and the only KX in Pro Circuit's pit is Eric Vallejo.  RC can clinch the title if things go his way.  MC can keep his hopes of winning the Vans Triple Crown $.5 mill if he wins.   ABC News is covering this race too.

The pit buzz does confirm Pichon wants to race some Supercross in 2002.

Byrne is riding an Emig Racing KX250, which he will have for the last three SX races.  After that he either 1)  Takes an offer for a 125 ride for nationals, 2)   Waits to see if Emig can get money together for nationals on KX250, or 3)   goes home and trains for next year.

Imprtant stuff from Dorito, Dept:
John Ulrich
Spearheads Fundraising Effort for Air Fences

I have always been overwhelmingly impressed by the support the motorcycle industry receives from fans, aftermarket and apparel companies and the motorcycle manufactures when it comes to supporting a good cause to help injured riders or raise awareness for rider safety. Its one more reason I love this industry.

In the past two days I have again been overwhelmed by the stance Roadracing World Publications and Team Hammer owner John Ulrich has taken to raise money for the purchase of 30 sections of Air Fence for the AMA Pro Racing Roadrace series. I have always been highly passionate about roadracing as well as having thoughts of my own on rider safety, but I've kept my thoughts to myself.

Not Ulrich! In one letter written by John and posted on Roadracingworld.com on Tuesday April 17th regarding rider safety in unprotected areas of the track, he ended the letter stating he was writing his check out for $2900 to buy one section of Air Fence, asking readers to join in the cause. It is now two and a half days since the original posting was made and I can report that as of approximately two hours ago, an amount of $47,000 has been raised which will purchase 13 sections. The goal is to raise $87,000 to purchase a total of 30 sections which will be taken to every Chevy Trucks/AMA Superbike race.

I have noticed that some people receiving this release have already made contributions which I think is wonderful. For those of you who support motorcycle racing, please go to the link below for more information and I ask that if you want and/or are able to, please make a donation. You will be supporting a great cause, RIDER SAFETY!!

Thank you to John Ulrich for starting this fundraising campaign and to all of you who support the cause. Following is the link on the story and name of website. If you'd like to make a donation, please make checks payable to AMA Pro Racing and send to:

Road Trip:  It's a long way to Dallas...

More on the Honda 4-stroke (from Honda):

"My first goal for 2001 was to help Honda develop the four-stroke. My second goal is to put the bike on top of the winner's circle," said Ryan Hughes, (in a Honda press release).

Motocross enthusiasts have eagerly awaited Honda's first four-stroke motocross bike. The race bike shares many attributes of Honda's legendary two-stroke designs, including Honda's latest, lightweight twin-spar aluminum frame. The all-new four-stroke engine blends Honda's considerable experience with its Baja-winning XR powerplants and the sophisticated technology developed in numerous road racing championships on both two and four wheels.

As the final step in preparation for the AMA outdoor national series, Hughes will campaign the CRF450R at Round 1 of the White Brothers Four-Stroke National Championships at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California on Sunday, April 22.

"There's no testing like racing, so we are going to have Ryan race the bike this weekend to work out any last minute details before round one of the outdoor national series," said Cliff White, Honda's Motocross Race Team Manager.

The Hughes-mounted CRF450R will make its official debut on Sunday May 13 in the first round of the 2001 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships, also at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California.

The AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross championships kick off just one week after EA Sports Supercross wraps up at Vegas.  All kinds of cool things are happening:   Ryno will race the new Honda 4-stroke, Shaun Palmer is going to give real motocross a try, JMB is returning to race a Suzuki, Vuillemin will be back, and so will Larry Ward, Michael Brandes,  (YZ250F) and John Dowd (KTM 520).  Also returning of course will be defending champions Travis Pastrana and Ricky Carmichael.  Carmichael has been a pro since 1997, and he has never lost an outdoor title, and never lost a race at Glen Helen.

11erniemight.jpg (39620 bytes)

Fonseca might have a title night as well as RC this weekend.  He is 20 points ahead of Buckelew with 2 rounds to go, including Dallas.  (The last round is a combined east/west race and doesn't count for title points.

Grant Langston will want to make up for that mistake at the last west 125 race in Houston.  He proved he can ride out front in Supercross, but you know what happened.

Today marks the beginning of the 5-week Supercross/Motocross Engine Ice Road Trip!  The TFS mediamobile is leaving snowy Pittsburgh for Dallas, and won't be back until after Hangtown, round 2 of the outdoor series.  You can track road trip progress on the front page of Motonews.com.

Vuillemin is back in Southern California, and he was happy to go riding and start getting ready for Vegas and Glen Helen.

France is looking forward to America's outdoor motocross championships.   Things didn't go so well in Supercross since DV, Tortelli and Roncada all some missed races due to injury.  All should be healthy and fast for Glen Helen, and they will be joined by the origional French fast guy, JMB himself.  Its hard to predict how he will do, but no matter what his return is news.   Maybe Cycle News should do a second Virtual Grandstand in French.  Maybe we should have a round of the outdoor nationals in France?

A really late version of news from Pontiac is up right here.

It's not illegal for riders under 16 to ride in Connecticut after all.  Mary Galvin, the State's Attorney that was handling reports that a track at Milford was a "regular stop for E.M.T's," issued a press release this morning.  The press release is on Mototalk.  After the events at the track and the state's investigation was a subject in the AMA's magazine "American Motorcyclist," the buzz was all about it would be illegal for younger riders to participate in motocross.  It didn't turn out that way. It was all about one track and things are worked out.

13mcclose.jpg (36603 bytes)

AMA Press release on Dallas SX:  PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Now that it's almost certain that Ricky Carmichael is going to win the 2001 EA Sports Supercross championship, the one prize that defending champ Jeremy McGrath is still hoping to win is the cool half-million dollar paycheck by completing a sweep of the Vans Triple Crown of Supercross. The second round of the three-race series within a series is set for Saturday, April 21 at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.

McGrath rode his Team Mazda Yamaha to victory in round one of the Vans Triple Crown in Anaheim, Calif., on Jan. 20. If McGrath wins in Texas Stadium he will have a chance at the $500,000 prize at the final round in Las Vegas on May 5. The Vans Triple Crown, in its third year, has yet to produce a three-race winner. Frenchman, David Vuillemin, came agonizingly close last year by winning the first two rounds, but fell short finishing fourth in the finale. If McGrath doesn't win at Texas and Las Vegas, then the rider with the most points from the three rounds will take home a check for $25,000.

Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki rider Carmichael maintains a solid 46-point lead with just three rounds remaining. If Carmichael wins and McGrath finishes third or worse, Carmichael will clinch the 2001 AMA EA Sports Supercross Championship. In addition to his run for the championship, Carmichael is within reach of tying McGrath's amazing record of 13-consecutive Supercross wins. When McGrath set that record in 1996 many believed that it would stand forever. While it still may, the fact that people are talking about Carmichael having a real chance at tying and eventually beating the record is a real testimony to the kind of season the young Floridian is having.

Kevin Windham
is riding a winning streak of his own. The Team Suzuki rider has won two years in a row at Texas Stadium. This year Windham has had an up-and-down season. Coming into this weekend's race he is fourth in the standings and has finished as high as second in New Orleans and St. Louis. The Baton Rouge, La., native ran at the front of several races, but is still looking for his first win this year. While he's won two straight races in Dallas, there is a bit of history working against Windham this weekend -- Suzuki has never won a Supercross main event in Texas Stadium.

Honda's Ezra Lusk and Mike LaRocco join McGrath and Windham as former winners in Texas Stadium.

The Dallas round also marks round seven of the eight-race AMA 125cc West Region Supercross Series. Yamaha of Troy rider Ernesto Fonseca leads the series by 20 points over teammate Justin Buckelew. Fonseca has piloted Yamaha's new YZ250F four-stroke to a very successful debut season. The Costa Rican native and 1999 AMA Motocross/Supercross Rookie of the Year will be gunning for his fifth victory of the season. Like Carmichael, Fonseca has a chance of wrapping up the championship Saturday.

News that sucks Dept.:
LBZ rider Robert Distler suffered critical injuries at Glamis on Saturday, April 15th when he overshot a jump by about 40 feet. Upon landing, his neck hit the cross bar which resulted in a severed trachea, tears in his esophagus, bruised lungs and a speculated severed nerve of his vocal cord.

Robert was treated at Brawley, a hospital in the vicinity of Glamis where an emergency tracheotomy was performed and in fact, this is what saved his life. From there he was airlifted to the University of California San Diego Trauma Center. Surgery was done immediately and his severed trachea was successfully repaired. He is resting comfortably and heavily medicated to reduce movement until the swelling subsides in his neck. Though not completely out of the woods as there is still the fear of infection from the esophagus injury, he made some movement on Sunday and if his fever remains on a low grade, he will be taken off the respirator as soon as Monday.

No questions have been asked or opinions given as to whether this will end his riding career but it is anticipated he will be in ICU for the next seven days and in the hospital for at least three weeks.

Many prayer's have been said which the family believes is crucial to Roberts recovery. Get Wells can be sent to Robert at distlers@home.com. For further information, please contact Dorina Groves at dg900sssp2@aol.com or (253) 261-5723.

IRL drivers Jeff Ward and Casey Mears will Join MC and Travis for a cool promo the Friday before the Dallas Supercross. Here's the press release...

With the IFMA series wrapping up in March and starting up again in August, LBZ/Hession Aggression riders John and Robert Distler have some time on there hands. Not to worry though, they have found plenty to do in the four months leading up to the continuation of the 2001 IFMA schedule.

Robert, aka Lil Dis', will be in Canada for a show from April 21-24. Details of the event are unknown at the moment but it was put together by friend and Canadian KTM/LBZ rider Andy Bell. While Lil Dis is busy across the border, brother John, aka Big Dis' will be in Las Vegas competing in the Milestone Motorsports Air MX event. Should all go well there, John plans to make their fourth event on April 28 in Fort Worth, TX.

Next stop for both John and Robert will be a Freestyle Demo at the EA Sports Supercross in Las Vegas, NV on May 5th along with Mike Jones, Dustin Miller, Nate Adams and Jimmie McGuire. This is a promotional demo for IFMA, pacefmx.com and the Big Air Assault video.

After the demo at Las Vegas, both John and Robert will start an 80 day road trip, crossing the country several times for the Extreme Moto-Music Madness tour. The tour is 38 events in 38 different cities and Robert will miss the first event in Utah due to his high school graduation ceremonies that will take place the same night of the event. Lil Dis' will join the tour at the second event in Tucson and continue on through the end. More details of the tour can be found at supercross.com.

You can stop guessing if JMB will be back for the outdoors, its going to happen.  Unless something changes (or he really has a wild sense of humor), JMB will race the entire US outdoor championships.   He is even going to have a comeback web site called www.jmback.com.   Check it out, they are already working on it.

RC is looking at MC's record of 13 wins in a row.  Pontiac was 10, and there are three more to go.  Lusk was second, LaRocco third, and MC 4th with a broken motor mount bolt.

Travis won the 125 title, Ramsey won the last race when he got the lead early and Travis took too long to get past Brown.

Here are some fun rumors from Pontiac:

-JMB may race the last two Supercrosses, Slat Lake City and Vegas...
-Travis wants a Supercross/Freestyle contract where he doesn't have to race outdoor nationals...
-Honda will outbid Kawasaki to get RC if they have to, even if its $2 million...
-Lusk and Tortelli have both been riding the Honda 4-stroke.   Lusk won't be on one in the Nats, Tortelli isn't sure.  The only one almost sure to race one is Ryno...

April 1 is supposed to be a day for fun pranks and lies, but no one was laughing at the St Louis airport the morning after the Supercross-at least not the people who were going to wait all day and probably the next for room on a flight out after one US Airways plane didn't have a crew, and the people got moved to the next plane.  This started a chain reaction of "bumping" which is ok when there is room but when you are last on the list to get on, you get a hotel.  Instead of fighting the crowds, "Extreme" Ray Gundy and I grabbed a one-way renta car and made a mad dash for Pittsburgh.

12kevinp.jpg (35524 bytes)

Pastrana at St Louis?

Not only did Pastrana ride the 125 class at St Louis, he also rode a qualifying heat in the 250 class and got second between MC and LaRocco, and then he climbed on a KTM 50 and mixed it up with the peewees.  Actually #14 is his cousin Kevin Pastrana, who just rode one class and had a mid-pack race.  Travis had a pretty exciting weekend though, winning everything in the 125 class after a great battle with Ramsey for the lead on the last lap, and getting a bit of a lecture from LaRocco after that 250 heat race.  He sat out the 250 main, details on the 125 racing section on the emag.

The amazing Ricky Carmichael now has 9 wins in a row, and he can't wait for this one to be over with.  He's really happy to be finally in control of a 250 Supercross title chase, but its stressful too, read about his race and comments on the emag 250 racing section.
